Discuss the relationship between Feminist and Queer Theory.
There is no doubt that there are many parallels between Queer and Feminist theory. Queer theory is a post-structuralist field of study, comprised of key concepts of taken from the core foundation of feminist theory. Much of queer criticism is based off that of feminist critiques. Both are similar in a sense that they take a view the world from a sort of macroperspective (as opposed to micro), highlighting all the inequalities that exist in society and trying to combat them with open-mindedness and freedom of expression. Feminist theory believes that society has been typically patriarchal, favoring the male gender, while noting that women have had to deal with all sorts of unfair and unjust social norms throughout history. Through the means of oppression, objectification, stereotyping, and discrimination, women have had to overcome a lot not just to succeed, but to even have the same rights as men. The oppression shown comes in all aspects of life; political, psychological, social, and even economic. Queer theory, in this regard, holds almost the same values. It is stemmed from the same basis, sighting that non-heterosexuals have often had these same kind of societal limitations as women. In addition, like feminist theory, queer theorists ultimate goal is to change the overall perspective of how sexuality is perceived, and delves into ways of how to combat marginalization of a specific group of people. What is feminism? The definition is often argued over by feminists and anti-feminists. Feminists believe that the expectations for women are far too high to be attainable for most—they are expected to be the perfect weight, the perfect height, the perfect everything in the eyes of society in order to be seen as worth anything. Feminists believe that women are seen by society as less powerful, less smart, simply less than men. Feminists also believe that feminism promotes gender equality, not misandry. They aim to fix this. Anti-feminists, on the other hand believe that feminism is women being obnoxious and putting themselves above men. They think feminism in 2015 in unnecessary. Women already have the right to vote, what more could they possibly want? This oppression is just one reason why feminism exists and—in my opinion—is extremely important in today’s world.

Early feminism was typically focused only on white women, likely because racism was still extremely prominent at the time feminism began emerging. It was not until Kimberlé Crenshaw introduced the term “intersectionality” in 1989 that feminism started to look at oppressed group’s needs (Nash, 2008, 2). Intersectionality is a way of thinking that acknowledges that when a person has identities that belong to more than one oppressed group, it impacts their quality of life more negatively. In this paper, I will argue that intersectionality is important in the discussion of feminist theories and activism because it ensures that feminism is for all women, not just a select group of them. Intersectionality has changed the way the feminist movement handles the overlapping of different identities, which has helped feminist theorists understand the experiences of women of colour much more clearly. While intersectionality has a very important role in the conversation and practice of feminism, there are certainly critiques of the concept that should be brought up. These critiques, however, can offer a way to improve the study of intersectionality.
What is feminism? According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary the standard definition defines feminism as “the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.” I believe the word feminism means a woman who is capable of doing the exact things a man can do. Both men and women are equal regardless the gender. There are many misconceptions when it comes to the word feminism such as, women having hatred towards men, women thinking they're above men, or only women can be feminist, and the gender stereotype. On the other hand, feminism is gender equality, acknowledging that any kind of violence is unacceptable regardless the gender, and realizing that women and men are not the same and recognizing that gender and sex are
Sexuality is a sensitive topic in today's conservative culture, and most people avoid discussing it at all. It should be the opposite, people should be talking about it, and people should be learning and understanding sexuality. Overall, this will make for a better and healthier community. Feminism and homosexuality are very different things regarding sexuality in their own respects, but regardless of being in two different bubbles, they do share similarities, for example: Sciortino and Kimmel's essay share the topics of sexuality and acceptance. Often, they are hard to find because the similarities are hiding within the differences. This probably does not make sense at first, but read on and understand how feminism and homosexuality share many similarities other than being topics hidden in the shadows. The two articles that are used in this essay are "Why Amy Schumer Is an Amazing Feminist" by Karley Sciortino, published in 2015, and "Ritualized Sexuality in Nacirema Subculture" by Michael Kimmel, published in 2006.
The goal of feminism as both a social movement and political movement is to make women and men equal not only culturally, but socially and legally. Even though there are various types of feminism that focus on different goals and issues, the ultimate end to feminism is abolishing gender inequality that has negative effects on women in our society. The issues and goals that a feminist may have are dependent on the social organization or the type of economic structure that is present. However, an ultimate end (a goal, achievement and/or accomplishment) would have to be social equality between men and women. The definition of feminism is very elusive. Maybe because of its ever-changing historical meaning, it’s not for certain whether there is any coherence to the term feminism or if there is a definition that will live up to the movement’s variety of adherents and ideas. In the book “No Turning Back,” author Estelle Freedman gives an accurate four-part definition of the very active movement: “Feminism is a belief that women and men are inherently part of equal worth. Because most societies privilege men as a group, social movements are necessary to achieve equality between women and men, with the understanding that gender always intersects with other social hierarchies” (Freedman 7).
As being developed by poststructuralism, feminism, lesbian & gay studies and even American pragmatist theory (Parker,2001; Seidman,1997), queer theory has become one of the most important theories, which contributes to the research of sociology, arts and organizations. On the one hand, queer theory has been used to study the relations between the sexuality, gender and workplace. On the other hand, by utilizing denaturalized, deconstructive and performative methods to queer the presumptions of the taken-for-granted norms, queer theorists question and disprove the traditions which people cherish (Seidman,1995).

Queer theory challenges basic tropes used to organize our society and our language: even words are gendered, and through that gendering an elliptical view of the hierarchy of society, and presumption of what is male and what is female, shines through. Queer theory rejects such binary distinctions as arbitrarily determined and defined by those with social power. It works to deconstruct these binaries, particularly the homosexual/heterosexual binary.4

In her opinion the biggest problem with feminism is that there is no real definition of what feminism is. The definition many people have formulated for feminism is having the goal of making woman socially equal to men. hook’s problem with this is the fact that all men are not socially equal. If women are to be the social equals to men then another question would be which men women will be socially equal to.
