The term ‘feminism’ is derived from the Latin word, femina meaning women, originally meant ‘having the qualities of females’. It began to be used with reference to the movement for sexual equality and women’s rights. The word feminism replaces ‘womanism’ that was popular in 1890s.

Dictionaries define it as the advocacy of women’s rights based on the belief in the equality of the sexes. Feminism in its broadest use, refers to everyone who is aware of, and seeking to end, women’s subordination to man.
