Admiral Pliny watched from his mammoth fleet of ships as Mt. Vesuvius started to rumble. As he watched the menacing volcano, a looming mass of ash and pumice shot into the darkening sky. He could hear the screams of the citizens on land and the cries of their children as they tried to run away from death's face. Pliny had a gut feeling that this would not end well. He knew that this eruption caused the fall of the beautiful and innocent city of Pompeii and of many of the citizens that occupied it, but still he wanted to save as many souls as he could. He sighed and began barking orders to the fleet and they began sailing to land, and quite possibly, their doom.

Although it had erupted many times before in the past 2,000 years, the most deadly eruption was on August 24th, 79AD. The eruption started when the volcano ejected a large cloud of debris into the atmosphere. The debris rose 12 miles high, which added to the mountain’s height, is more than double the height of Mt. Everest. It was estimated to be the equivalent of 100,000 atom bombs. This debris was a searing combination of pumice and ash which equaled to over 1300 F. It quickly started racing down the mountain at 400 mph, destroying everything in its path, even people. The debris covered 200 square miles and was over 16 feet deep. There is a song called Pompeii by Bastille that sort of tells about that night. What we was learned is not to build cities at the bottom of a volcano so they don’t get ruined by the volcano. Mt. The earthquake caused movement to the earth that started a flow of events that led to the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius.
