The conscious of Paul, a young boy who feels that he is unlucky throughout “The Rocking Horse Winner” a short story by J.D. Lawrence, is caught up with constantly coming up with ways of satisfying his mother’s never-ending needs for materialistic objects. Paul is coming from a poor family, where Paul’s mother describes the reason as to why they are not living a better life is due to her husband's unluckiness. His mother, Hester, desires materialistic things; a never-ending cycle of wanting that continues to grow. In order for Paul to satisfy his mother, and for himself to be content with his efforts to help his mother, a mother who barely pays any attention to her son, he begins to gamble in horse racing. There are voices inside the house that seem to haunt the residents, they repeat a simple phrase, and that one phrase only, “There must be more money”. Due to the families constant worry about their financial status, these whispers coming from the voices in the walls encourages Paul to matures, and make a living for his family. As time progresses the voices in the house go insane, they begin to chat what seems louder and stronger, “There must be more money”. Paul, being stressed from all the pressure to win that Bassett and his Uncle Oscar have put on him ends up riding his rocking horse until his death. All Paul had ever wanted was to feel love and affection from his cold-hearted mother. His whole life his mother never presented any emotion toward her children.
