Based on the analysis of a religious relief, a fragment of the Book of the Dead, and a false door, both water and urbanization played an important role in ancient Egyptian society, with water forming the foundation of life and cities providing the specialization necessary for religion. In the Relief of a Nile Goddess, the goddess carries a tray piled with lotus blossoms and water vessels atop hanging ankh signs of “life” and “stability.” Judging from the lotus flower originating from the water, the Egyptians came to view the lotus as a symbol of water; the artist’s depiction of “life” and “stability” suspended under the lotus implies the society heavily depended on water and connects the lotus to life itself.
