In The Rule of Saint Benedict, Saint Benedict details the instruments of good works that he believes will be produced in monks when they submit to God’s will and become fruitful in their lives due to their living in monastic communities. According to Saint Benedict, monks are to love the Lord their God with all their heart, soul, and mind, as well as to love one’s enemies, to confess past sins, and to live a life dedicated to the Lord. Many of these guidelines for living a Godly life are still being taught and preached at major churches around the globe. Are all of them still being taught to modern Christians though? How about number ten of Saint Benedict’s list “To deny oneself in order to follow Christ.”(Benedict 52) Denying oneself is hard though, many people, even Christians would say, some even saying that it is just too hard. While some may declare their unwillingness to do this, in my perspective, denying oneself is an integral part of following Christ and more modern Christian teachers, pastors, and leaders should discuss and teach this truth to their congregations, thus enabling modern Christ followers to become more fully devoted to God like their monastic contemparies.

The order that Francis founded would start from a simple idea of living a very poor life, preaching the teaching of Jesus and submission to the church or anyone in need. A main part of Francis vision involves helping those in need without anything in return. The reason for Francis’s resignation comes from his coming to terms with the size of his movement.
