The history begins at london's east end in 1865 by one time methodist reform church minister william booth and his wife catherine .Originally booth named the organization the east london mission. Thieves, prostitutes, gamblers, and drunkards were among Booth's first converts to Christianity and this was the first sign of growth.In the beginning(1867) he only had 10 full-time workers but by 1874 the numbers had grown to 100 volunteers and 42 evangelists all serving under the name “the christian mission” booth was considered general superintendent. They launched an offensive throughout the British Isles, in some cases facing real battles as organized gangs mocked and attacked them. They help with food and clothes and a variety of many other things that someone can think of.Today, The Salvation Army serves in more than 120 countries and territories and preaches the gospel in 160 languages.
