What defines a story as great? Is it the setting, the plot, or even the characters? A famous author name Mary Rival once said, “In order to deem a story great, it must engage the reader, use language purposefully, and encourage the reader to learn something about themselves or their world in the process.” Each of these three ideas are shown and developed in the short story “The Scarlet Ibis,” written by James Hurst; However, what makes this story truly great is the use of irony, descriptive character personalities, and how readers can relate with the characters. This story follows the early life of the narrator, Brother, as he reflects on the time that he shared with his younger brother Doodle, readers can see the impact these brothers made on each other and their lives as a whole. Making a great and impactful story can be done in many ways, in the case of “The Scarlet Ibis,” the irony, the personalities, and the relatability are used to push the limits of a “great story,” to creative a truly astounding narrative. Irony is one of the key ways of making “The Scarlet Ibis” a great story. It keeps readers involved by having them question the outcomes of different situations and wondering about their view. One of the most prominent uses of irony is when Brother says, “...but having a brother who was not all there was unbearable, so I began to make plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow”(Hurst 158). Readers then find out that he did not actually kill his brother. This
What is the definition of pride? If someone were to search the definition they would find that pride is “a feeling or deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one's own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired.” People can experience pride from many things like success, or intelligence, and even simple petty things being the first to turn in their test in a class. In the story the character Brother has a different type of pride, instead of being prideful of his actions his pride is a character trait. Brother is prideful of himself and having his crippled brother Doodle damaged his pride which is a dangerous thing when pride is a trait instead of a feeling. People often forget about how important a family member, especially siblings, are because they haven’t matured enough to understand the complexity and importance of life and family. Who is the dynamic character in “The Scarlet Ibis?” To answer this question, one must first know what a dynamic character is or means. A dynamic character is one who changes by the end of the story. In “The Scarlet Ibis” the narrator is the one who is the dynamic character. How? First of all, the reason why the narrator is dynamic is he feels atrocious of how he has treated Doodle, his brother. The second reason is the narrator comprehends he should have appreciated his brother more. The last reason is the narrator feels fallacious of what he has done to Doodle; which has possibly led to Doodle’s death.
Have your parents ever told you that you needed to improve at something? It could be a sport, activities, or even how well you do in school. This is a vile thing for parents to do to their children. Sometimes parents just need to back up a few steps and let you be yourself. The same can happen with an older sibling! That is the case in The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst. The narrator of this story has a younger brother called Doodle, who has some health issues. Big brother pushes little brother to be better than he is. In The Scarlet Ibis, Doodle strives for the goals that his brother sets for him for many reasons, which reflects the conflict in the story.

There are numerous subjects in the story such as pride, brotherhood and selfishness that can demonstrate a theme that states that pride and selfishness can interfere with brotherhood by convincing us to commit cruel things to the ones we love. In the beginning of the story,
Some people can get blinded by their pride and engulf them in a world that makes them unaware of other people and controls their actions and for this reason it lead to cold blooded murder. “The Scarlet Ibis,” by James Hurst is a story of a silent war between two brothers. In the final line of James Hurst’s short story, “The Scarlet Ibis,” the narrator sobs over the body of his dead seven year old brother. This brother, nicknamed Doodle, was born crippled, but taught to walk by his ashamed older sibling, the narrator. On the day before Doodle is to start school, there was a great and powerful storm in which “thunder roared out, hiding even the sound of the sea… and darkness descended” (Hurst 353). In the midst of this nightmare, the narrator abandoned Doodle. When he went back for his crippled brother, it was too late. In a similar text by John Steinbeck, “Of Mice and Men,” two ranch workers, one small and smart, one a lumbering giant with a mental disability, find work in California in the middle of the Great Depression. The stronger of the two, Lennie, accidentally breaks a woman’s neck and flees on orders given to him by the smarter of the two, George. The woman’s husband plans to shoot Lennie in the gut, but George finds him first and, in an act of mercy, ends his life. In both texts, the main character brings about the death the person they are most close to. Despite the multitude of these superficial overlaps in character traits, James Hurst’s Doodle is more sympathetic than Steinbeck’s Lennie due to contrast in dynamic characteristics, level of innocence, and ignorance of key skill sets and
