Esther has everything a young woman could dream of having: an amazing boyfriend; title worth’s of rewards and successes related to her achievements in school; and a successful job in a women's magazine. Even though all of this makes Esther look good in front of her family, friends, and others; she's miserable on the inside. She isn’t satisfied with what she does as a person. She feels as if no matter what she does or how she does it, the majority of people are grooming her to become a gentle housewife. Back home, Esther feels her worst fears coming true about herself. The rejection from the writing program kills her self-confidence and she's stuck at home with her mom for the rest of the summer. Soon after Esther finally begins to come out from her depression. Her depression improved so much that the institution allowed her to leave and go into town and enjoy everything around her. Esther also decided to express her sexual freedom. She met a Harvard professor in Cambridge and she lost her virginity. After sex, she went to her friend, Joan, who later attempted to commit suicide, for emotional help but she realized she healed and doesn’t have serious physical or emotional harm. At the end, Esther steps into her exit interview at the institution and we could only assume that she was released.
Depression is the persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. It affects how you feel, think and behave and could lead to a variety of emotional and psychical problems. Esther had many things that made her get into the state of depression. She compared herself to other women around her and saw how successful they were and would compete with them. She hated the idea of becoming a housewife and doing everything for a man. Also, she couldn’t accept that males dominated society and that woman must bow down to them; and she for sure didn’t want to follow her mother’s
