Traditional views of women have existed since the first known civilizations. Typical gender roles would include women taking care of the children, cleaning the house, preparing meals, and taking care of her husband; all while the husband works and supplies his family with what they need. Although there is nothing wrong with these traditional gender roles, times have changed and a lot of women are expanding against societal norms and doing more with their life than just the housekeeper. Women are achieving higher education, obtaining stable careers and financial stability for themselves. The American Association of University Women, or AAUW, published several articles on the gender pay gap. In 2016, their article "The Simple Truth about the Gender Pay Gap" discusses the basic problems surrounding the whole issue. Currently in 2016, the average woman makes 79 percent of what the average man makes in the United States. Throughout a woman's lifetime, that 79 percent pay equates to $700,000 loss for a high school graduate, $1.2 million loss for a college graduate, and $2 million loss for a professional college graduate, in comparison to the earnings in a man's lifetime. Women deserve to be financially independent so they can take care of themselves and their children, if needed. The typical marital relationship norms are changing. There are many single mothers who are struggling to make ends and living in poverty, all due to the fact that women are not receiving equal pay to men. Also, a woman's ethnicity and education level greatly affects their pay as well. Native Hawaiian, African American, Hispanic, and American Indian women had the lowest average earnings in comparison to white, non-Hispanic men in the United States.
