Being daring is a trait often seen in young people. For example, during the Winter, I chose to go walk out on the ice on a lake even though I knew it was dangerous. This is just one time where I have been daring as a young person. The trait is also shown in the short story “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty, and The Saints, by Lex Thomas. The Sniper and Gates are both very daring through how they take risks and complete daring acts. The Sniper is a daring character that takes chances and does things that are dangerous even in a warzone. First, he lights a cigarette, even though he knows that it is a large risk to take that could result in an unfortunate outcome. “Placing a cigarette between his lips, he struck a match, inhaled the smoke …show more content…
Gates was at a party and rode a wild animal through the party which is very dangerous, crazy, and very daring. He risks serious injury or death when he does this. Also, Gates was very daring in the threats that he made. He is stuck in a school and he wants more from the poeple feeding them. So, he makes some very serious threats. “Have it all by next week or I will cut off your son’s head” (Thomas 154). Gates is daring enough to even threaten people directly to get what he wants. This is how he threatens to kill someone which is daring how he does it directly to them and blackmails them. He basically has the guts to directly threaten someone where they could not do anything for him, or stop supplying him with food. Gates is very daring in the acts that he performs throughout the story. Overall, the Sniper shows the daring trait better in the story. For example, goes to look at a dead body, even though he knows it is dangerous and he is in a Warzone. “The Sniper darted across the street. A machine gun tore up the ground around him with a hail of bullets, but he escaped” (O’Flaherty 5). The Sniper again does a daring act in a Warzone. He makes the choice to go look at the body, even though it is dangerous because he is in an active Warzone. He still ignores that fact and still completes what he wants to do unscathed. Gates does daring acts, but out of choice, and many of them are not as dangerous. The Sniper has many daring acts

In “The Sniper”, the main character is thrown into a revolutionary civil war. He’s pressed to make quick decisions off of his training and human instinct. The protagonist in “Ambush” is faced with the same issue, he’s in a bunker on watch waiting for something to happen. He’s trained to react when something does, but his humanly instinct tells him otherwise. Both characters soon make decisions they regret, but can’t take back. “I’ll watch him walk toward me, his shoulders slightly stooped, his head cocked to the side, and he’ll pass within a few yards of me and suddenly smile at some secret thought and then continue up the trail to where it bends back into the fog,” (“Ambush”) said by the protagonist, this clues the reader in on the fact that he regrets his decision of killing the innocent man who may have never harmed him. Albeit someone senior to him told him that it was right and completely justified, he still feels distraught and remorseful about what he had done. “Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother's face,” (“The Sniper”) said

Adversity is when people have to overcome a problem even though it might be hard for them to do. Overcoming a problem can make people stressed out or nervous that they are doing something wrong. Liam O’Flaherty made The Sniper from “The Sniper” face many hard times throughout the story.
