The Southeastern conference was created in 1932 (Johnson, 2006). It is an American college athletic conference whose schools are located mainly in the southeastern part of the United States. The conference’s headquarters are in Birmingham, Alabama. It participates in the National Collegiate Athletic Association division I in athletic competitions. For football it is part of the Football Bowl Subdivision. The SEC was the first NCAA Division I conference to hold a championship game for college football and was one of the founding members for the Bowl Championship Series. The Southeastern conference is regarded as one of the most successful sports conferences in terms of wins, and financially. The founding members of Southeastern conference consisted of University of Alabama, University of Florida, University of Georgia, University of Kentucky, University of Mississippi, University of Tennessee, Auburn University, Louisiana State University, Mississippi State University, Vanderbilt University, Sewanee, Georgia Tech, and Tulane (Johnson, 2006). They began to play in the Southeastern Conference in 1992. This boasted the total number of SEC schools to 12, promoting a Western and Eastern Division. Another expansion in 2012 added Texas A&M and the University of Missouri each to the conference. This makes a total of 14 members now in the Southeastern Conference. There have been many great SEC football players. Some of the all-time greats include Herschell Walker, Joe Namath, Bo Jackson, And the Manning family Archie, Peyton, and Eli.
