The Civil War, known as America’s bloodiest war, revolved around the conflict of slavery in the nation. Slavery first began in the New World when it was introduced in the colonial times. The introduction of slavery lead to an age of inequality and concluded with a bloodbath. For one to know how slavery came to be, they must learn about the history of how America came to be. Back in the colonial times, the New World was divided into thirteen colonies that originated from Great Britain. As time passed, so did the patience of British Americans. In 1820, Henry Clay proposed the Missouri Compromise to Congress. The Missouri Compromise was a compromise ensuring the balance of the number of free/slave states in America, and which also allowed Missouri to enter as a slave state and Maine as a free state to maintain the equal balance. It also no longer allowed slavery north of Missouri establishing an imaginary line that served as a boundary between free and slave nations. Henry Clay established this compromise to, in hope, maintain the Union of northern and southern states. When America gained more territory and land was open to the West, more people began to migrate westward. This migration leads to the complication of slavery issues between the North and the South. Southerners believed that slavery should be allowed in the new territory while the northerners disagreed. While this was happening more problems came to the New World, America went to war with Mexico. In April 1846, Mexican and American military forces fought over territory in the southwest region of America and with America attaining the territory in February 1848 this completed President Polk’s belief that the United States had a “manifest destiny” to spread across the continent to the Pacific Ocean. That war was known as the Civil War. The Civil War was first believed to be a short war but after the first battle, the North and Lincoln realized that this war was going to be a very long one. The Civil War was fought in thousands of different places, from southern Pennsylvania to Texas; from New Mexico to the Florida coast but the after North’s victory at Antietam, Lincoln passed the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing slaves in the south. This victory encouraged the North as they won both battles at Gettysburg and Vicksburg. Soon after Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, the nation realized that the war wasn’t just about preserving the Union. It was also about abolishing slavery for good. So finally, in Appomattox, Virginia, the south surrendered thus ending the Civil War.
