In the novel The Survivors, by Will Weaver, Miles Newell displays a constant mood of courageousness. One time in the novel, Miles takes the time to walk Sarah to the bus stop, even though she could've walked herself. (19) Another time Miles shows courageousness is when he shoots at that couple near the river. They could’ve been psychopaths and murdered him with axes. They were pretending to have a baby after all. (55) The last way Miles was courageous is when he and Artie tripped Danny off his motorcycle, at Birch Bay to get their old cabin back. (288) Danny could have also tried to kill them with his guns and stuff but they didn't they just left without a fight, which is kinda weird. Courageous means not being afraid to do whatever it takes

A courageous action most often is associated with reaching a goal or task of importance, despite the dangers even risks associated with it (“Courage”). For any specific act to be considered truly courageous it must be reasonably thought about and determined that the goal is well worth the risk or danger (“Courage”). Courage so often can be put with words such as heroic, and bravery although with courage there can be a fine line between courageous acts and plain foolishness. All this can make people believe that courage only applies to physical actions. There are two kinds of courage moral and physical in many cases they are both displayed in a single courageous act; however, bravery must come before all else, because they are associated with reaching a task of importance regardless of risk.

The importance of courage is that it helps continue with our story or life. Courage gives us strength and bravery to keep moving on with our life. If we didn’t have courage we would be still and not want to move on with our life. In the book Peace like a River by Leif Enger, Ruben, the main character, has courage to move on and go find his brother. Ruben finds the courage to go to go find work, when Jeremiah got sick and couldn’t support the family. Ruben find the strength and brave to go up to the stand and testify of what he saw during the shooting. Last Ruben had the courage to go and find Davy in the Badlands.
Harper Lee’s definition of courage is that courage isn’t someone with a gun, it is someone who can set a hard goal and go through with it, like Mrs. Dubose. “I turned around and saw most of the town people and the entire bus delegation looking at me. Miss Caroline and I had conferred twice already, and they were looking at me in the innocent assurance that familiarity breeds understanding. I rose graciously on Walter’s behalf” (Lee 26). Miss Caroline wants to give Walter Cunningham money for lunch, he would not take it. Scout explained why. Scout has courage because she decides to stand up and tell Miss Caroline what the people are like in Maycomb. She did that because no one else would. The deeper meaning of this quote is that Scout was the only one that would stand up for Walter, not knowing there would be
The author Helen Keller once said, “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” In the nonfiction book Unbroken written by Laura Hillenbrand, Louie Zamperini’s bravery brought Keller’s words to reality when Louie fought against a shark in the Pacific Ocean during a Japanese attack to their raft of three men. Obviously, Louie showed impeccable will of courage to survive against the Japanese attackers and sharks at the same time, making the events in Unbroken genuine and dangerous piece of Louie Zamperini’s life.
One particular instance where courage is considered is Kiowa’s death. Jimmy Cross blames himself for Kiowa’s death because he thinks he was not courageous enough to pull Kiowa out of the field they were in. O’Brien later gives the reader an inside look at Jimmy Cross’s thoughts, and the metaphor he created to compare the situation to: “A lost ball, he thought. Tired players searching through the rough, sweeping back and forth in long systematic patterns”(167). Death becomes easier to cope with for the soldiers when it is compared to something familiar and peaceful, like golf. Jimmy Cross was comparing his dead friend to a lost golf ball - small in comparison to the rest of the course(or the war) yet important enough to spend time looking
1. Crane appeared to be enthusiastic, as he used a fresh approach, to write about the war. There are two quotes, from the story, which, exactly, reveal this. From the first of the quotes, ("...As the landscape charged from brown to green, the the army awakened, and began to tremble with eagerness at the noise of rumors..."), we can tell, that something exciting, in a dramatic way was going on. We can, also, begin to see, that the army seemed to be fighting for something big, since it is mentioned, in the text, that they were awakened, suddenly. The army was fighting, for something they, probably, wanted, badly, as we can see, that the army "began to tremble with eagerness"). The second quote, from the story, which reveals Crane's fresh approach, was ("He was swelled with a tale he had heard from a reliable friend...").
In “The Sniper” by Liam O'flaherty, the sniper is shown as courageous, strong, and curious. The sniper is shown to be courageous when he risked his life to fight for what he believes in. “Cautiously he raised himself and peered over the parapet. There was a flash and a bullet whizzed over his head(O’Flaherty 437). This quote proves that the sniper was courageous because that bullet could have killed him, when he raised his head over the parapet.
That is where our word comes in: courageous . According to the American Dictionary , Courageous means not deterred by danger or pain: brave. Its origin is from the french word courageous. When we as a society think about being courageous , we often picture someone that doesn’t go through hard times and even if they do, their moral state is so high that they never break down. However, is that really what it means to be courageous?
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point view… until you climb inside his skin and walk around in it (Lee pg.30).” In To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, a fictional southern town undergoes great turmoil over racial issue, Harper Lee represents courageous actions. The main conflict of this book is racism included with a black mas trial told from a little girl's perspective. Harper Lee is a brave woman because she criticized half the country, was a white female, and told racism when it was still legal and practiced in some parts. Harper Lee showed bravery by, being a white female writing about her own opinion in a time where it was practiced in some parts.
The word courage means the ability to do something that frightens one. In the book that we're reading by Mildred Taylor called Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Cassie shows courage in a few moments throughout the book. Cassie is an African American girl and the only girl in her family. Because of this, she feels like she has to protect her younger siblings. Cassie showed courage when she had to stand up for Little man, when she had to confront Mr.Barnet, and when she had to stand up to rival Lillian Jean.
Whether someone is a soldier or a cancer survivor, the person is courageous. The word courage can be interpreted in different ways. Beowulf in Beowulf, Macbeth in Macbeth by William Shakespeare, and Ralph in Lord of the Flies by William Golding are all characters who represent the word courage. Courage is a quality that people learn throughout a journey from overcoming fear and conquering it. If people simply believe and work hard, they can be courageous.
Is it hard to obtain courage? People always face hard choices in their lives, and live through it, but does that mean they still have courage? According to Eleanor Roosevelt: “You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.” This quote was really motivational for Kelley Kalafatich who starred in a TEDTalk, “Living with Courage: Embracing Fear to Follow Your Heart.” To me, Roosevelt’s quote means that each horror you live through, you will gain helpful character traits to help you get through the next horror easier. Therefore, Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote can be connected to my life, the arts, and the world around me.
