Of this he was absolutely sure; if ever he came to doubt it, his life would lose all meaning” He does not believe in God and feel like the day he believes in him is the day his life is meaningless. In the trial of Meursault in Albert Camus’ The stranger, much is made of his actions at his mother’s funeral. These are very relevant to the crime for which he is being tried. Meursault got a letter saying his mom was dead and didn’t even (24) contrite about it. At his mother’s wake keeping, a lady was crying and he found it (25) exasperating. The guy taking care of the dead asked if he wanted to see his mom and he said “ I realized then that I shouldn’t have said No, and it made me rather embarrassed.” (Camus 5) Meursault did not want to see his mother even though he got the last chance to see her face. On top of that, he smoked next to her coffin during her wake keeping and this shows that he had no emotions toward his mother. For him to not show no emotions towards his mother gives as the idea that he shows no emotions towards other people. The conviction of Meursault represents another main point of absurdism, that life is precious. It only takes forty five minutes for an entire jury to unanimously decide to send Meursault to the guillotine, which is unreasonable. If the jury had not felt the emotions that were supposed to influence their decision, the prosecutor's argument would have seemed completely irrational. In one of his later interviews, Camus made the somewhat irritated comment that Meursault is the “only Christ we deserve.” While this seem to be a pithy, witty comment, we need to figure out how Meursault is like Christ. The courtroom portrays Meursalt as an appalling man for enjoying himself the day after his mother’s funeral. The broad statement said by the prosecutor shows that society does not allow one to have any entertaining moments after a time of repentance because it is thought to be disrespectful. A quick rebuttal by Meursalt’s lawyer helps realign the trial so that it is actually focusing on why they are having the trial in the first place by saying, ““Come now, is my client on trial for burying his mother or for killing a man?” The spectators laughed.” (96). The trial never focuses on why Meursalt killed the Arab man and no one ever bothers to make any real efforts to discover his motives.
