when the chaplain expresses that Meursault's state of mind results from "extreme despair," Meursault says he is apprehensive, not frantic. The clergyman demands that all the censured men he has known have in the end turned to God for solace. In speaking of his conversation with the judge, Meursault says “That was unthinkable, he said; all men believe in God, even those who reject Him. Of this he was absolutely sure; if ever he came to doubt it, his life would lose all meaning” He does not believe in God and feel like the day he believes in him is the day his life is meaningless. At the end of the book, Meursault states “I laid my heart open to the (3) benign indifference of the universe”(Camus 75). When Meursault realized there was no turning back or (4) curb in the situation he was in, he started to rely on the indifference of the world which is very ironic because when the chaplain told him, he refused. In the trial of Meursault in Albert Camus’ The stranger, much is made of his actions at his mother’s funeral. These are very relevant to the crime for which he is being tried. Meursault got a letter saying his mom was dead and didn’t even (24) contrite about it. At his mother’s wake keeping, a lady was crying and he found it (25) exasperating. The guy taking care of the dead asked if he wanted to see his mom and he said “ I realized then that I shouldn’t have said No, and it made me rather embarrassed.” (Camus 5) Meursault did not want to see his mother even though he got the last chance to see her face. On top of that, he smoked next to her coffin during her wake keeping and this shows that he had no emotions toward his mother. For him to not show no emotions towards his mother gives as the idea that he shows no emotions towards other people.
