Lone Survivor is an autobiography, written by Marcus Luttrell. Marcus tells us the story of his childhood, his training to become a navy Seal and his first hand eyewitness account of the disastrous operation RedWing. Operation RedWing was a mission when Seals team 10, including Marcus and his three brothers in arms were assigned the task of hunting down and killing Taliban cell leader Ahmad Shah. During this mission the Navy Seals suffered their worst losses in Seal history since WW2 because about 21 soldiers were killed in action. During this book we see themes of honor, sacrifice and brotherhood.
In this book I like how the afghan civilians in a small village, were prepared to sacrifice their lives in order to help Marcus Luttrell hide

An quote from this part is when Michael tells Marcus
“You stay alive Marcus. And tell Cindy that I love her”
This quote shows us that Michaels brotherhood with his friends is really strong and he is willing to run up the hill to get a radio signal to send for help, so that there is a chance that his friends will survive, even if it meant that he would be killed. I liked this because Michael was ready to die, if it meant that his brothers in arms could live.
In this novel I got the impression that the Seals felt that they needed to protect their honor, no matter what the cost. This is shown in the novel when the four Seals had the chance to run down the hill and hide, or they could stay and fight till the end and they chose to fight the Taliban head on, trying to take out as many enemy soldiers as they could before they died. And example that shows honor is at the start of the book when Marcus is telling us what it means to be a Navy Seal and says
“I will never quit. My nation expects me to be physically harder and mentally stronger than my enemies. If knocked down I will get back up, every time. I will draw on every remaining ounce of strength to protect my enemies and to accomplish our mission. I am never out of the fight.”
This quote shows us that Marcus is committed to protecting his honor and the Seals reputation until the end because he has been trained to be physically and mentally stronger than his enemies. I thought that
In the end of the book the Spartans end up being surrounded, their flanks taken and completely out numbered Xerxes asks Leonidas one last time if he will kneel. In one last act of defiance Leonidas and his men make a final stand and a attempt on Xerxes life fully well knowing that there was no escaping a certain death. Their commitment to their cause was unwavering believing fully in what they fought for they were committed to the point of willfully giving up their lives for their cause and they did so with pride. This one final act ties into how the Marine Corps is very much like the Spartans of old as the
What I learned from this book is that although we’ve all earned the title marine, our core values and ways doesn’t just end at the conclusion of boot camp, we have to bring it with us to the fleet and eventually use our military teachings back with us as citizens. We can contribute good into our communities because our customs and curtsies, respect, core values, adaptation abilities, leadership traits, etc., would be what sets us out to be different than the general population.
Everyday, people are forced to face with vicious circle of decisions: whether to stick to their morals or obey the authority figure. But it’s a fact that people have a propensity to obey authority, more than to preserve their own morals. A Few Good Men is a film that illustrates the struggle every marine faces-- to follow orders, good or bad. But why would marines follow the orders without hesitation if that order questions the principles they live by? Because the orders in the navy are meant to follow all for the reason of making everyone in Navy into good marines and to be strong enough to defend the nation. It required unquestioning commitment and obedience to orders. The articles, “The Perils of Obedience” by Stanley Milgram and “The
In this essay, I will discuss how Tim O’Brien’s works “The Things They Carried” and “If I Die in a Combat Zone” reveal the individual human stories that are lost in war. In “The Things They Carried” O’Brien reveals the war stories of Alpha Company and shows how human each soldier is. In “If I Die in a Combat Zone” O’Brien tells his story with clarity, little of the dreamlike quality of “Things They Carried” is in this earlier work, which uses more blunt language that doesn’t hold back. In “If I Die” O’Brien reveals his own personal journey through war and what he experienced. O’Brien’s works prove a point that men, humans fight wars, not ideas. Phil Klay’s novel “Redeployment” is another novel that attempts to humanize soldiers in war. “Redeployment” is an anthology series, each chapter attempts to let us in the head of a new character – set in Afghanistan or in the United States – that is struggling with the current troubles of war. With the help of Phil Klay’s novel I will show how O’Brien’s works illustrate and highlight each story that make a war.
In the book SEAL Team Six By Howard Wasdin, there are many different themes that the author develops. Two of the most prevalent he uses are brotherhood and morality. Brotherhood is developed because the SEAL team members learn to trust each other like family. Navy SEALS must also recognize morality because it can easily be lost on some of the most traumatic ops. Wasdin develops the themes of brotherhood and morality throughout the book.
In the book, Moore travel around and documents the secret mission and meeting that the American and Afghanistan freedom fighter had. He also interviews the different soldiers and generals that were involved. The book is incredibly detailed and organized. The book isn’t boring in the slightest and actually keeps people on the edge with description and imagery of the attacks and planes dropping bombs on top of the enemy. The book ignores the views of people who want to be politically correct and gives the reader what they want to hear without sugar coating it. He uses base facilities and names of people who were close to bin laden to show why the infiltrated certain villages and cave systems. As a military enthusiasts this book is a good example of the sacrifice and danger that our men and women face overseas and
And he is fully willing to sacrifice his very life for this: “… I alone will fulfill the wish of your people … or die in the foe’s grasp.”
In my opinion, he is a very honorable soldier and I am glad he is being recognized for his sacrifices as well as his friends. The director of Lone Survivor, Peter Berg, persistently tried to preserve the characters actions as accurately as possible. However, some events were added to lure a large audience by making them feel emotionally connected to the soldiers. During an interview with Marcus, he was asked why certain things were left out of the movie,
Reading this book kept me on my toes. It made me feel like I was in that situation too. This book is worth reading. It's an exciting book that makes you feel like you're the one who has to make all those tough decisions, and that you control what happens next. One of the best war books I’ve ever
He looked at Orion before saying, “Redemption is for those with something to redeem for. You do not deserve this exile. You deserve your freedom like any other Guardian.”
He is explaining that when danger is afar, citizens are willing the sacrifice everything they have
Negative thoughts rushed my head, but there was nothing I could've done. I walked along the broken twigs and shrubs to the end of the tree line. Looking at my house gave me relief and discomfort. But then I noticed something. The blinds in the window had opened up, to which revealed my sister, Mai. All the burden over my heart had just been lifted upon seeing her face. I rubbed my eyes, with disbelief, then looked up upon the window. That's when I noticed something odd. There was a person next to her, she was pointing at something. I couldn't make out the person but I noticed she was pointing right at me. I took a closer look, that person was me. It was from my
“So I must be called of no account and a coward if I must carry out every order you may happen to give me. Tell other men to do these things, but give me no more commands, since I for my parts have no intention to obey you.”
While in Afghanistan fighting the terrorist group called Taliban, Marcus Luttrell and his other three Navy SEAL partners were disclosed by two goat keepers who skulked up the mountain of Sawtalo Sar. The goat keepers were released by the SEALs and warned the members of the Taliban that there are Americans on the mountain. The Taliban prepared for battle and found Marcus and his team. The battle lasted for about two hours and during that time all the SEALs except Marcus died, hence “The Lone Survivor”. While in Afghanistan, Marcus learns a lot about himself and faces many struggles. My three searches in this autobiography are when Marcus searches for an answer pertaining to the goat keepers lives. The second search is how Marcus searches to overcome his ego and ask for help. Lastly, the third search is Marcus searching for his own identity.
There are real life superheros in today’s society. Some examples of these real-life superheros are police officers, firefighters, and soldiers. Soldiers are the bravest out of all, because they go to war, risking their lives everyday. The incredible true story of Marcus Luttrell, a Navy SEAL and his three comrades, Michael Murphy, Matthew Axelson, and Danny Dietz is one of the most inspiring stories ever. The movie Lone Survivor was created based on the real events that took place in 2005. Marcus and his three SEAL comrades were sent on a mission, code named Operation Red Wings. The mission required them to find Ahmad Shah, a Taliban militia leader that was killing American soldiers. The four men were flown into the heart of Afghanistan in a Chinook transport helicopter and were dropped off into the unknown. When their boots hit the ground in the mountains, it was dark and rainy. The four soldiers hiked for hours in the rain, struggling to keep their balance in the rugged terrain. After walking the exhausting miles, they arrived at an area in the mountains overlooking where Shah was taking refuge, and waited until morning.
