Overall the Locket is rather sad and a little difficult to understand at first, but the happy ending is vastly different from the rest of the story as it more easy to understand and also is hopeful and shows life rather than death. This leaves the reader feeling good about the story at the end. The first time I read the story, I was very shocked by the ending. However, I liked the story so much that I read it 4 or 5 times. After reading it more carefully, I realized that the ending is very predictable. From the very start until the end, it is constantly foreshadowing the ending. Moreover, the clues to the stories ending start very subtle and small, and get more obvious as one continues to read.
The story starts with four soldiers gathered around a camp fire. Two of them were questioning Edmond about his locket. One of the two even joked that it was like a charm that helped keep him safe during the war. Also, there is one more soldier who does not talk. Although the non-talking character goes nearly unnoticed at the start, we find out at the end that the non-speaking soldier is likely the thief of the locket.

It was clear that the soldiers admired the locket and that it was valuable, so it would not be too hard to imagine someone stealing it. Moreover, Edmond has a dream with “a serpent coiling around his throat”. It could be interpreted that he dreamed of the serpent when the locket was being removed from his
Edmond was at war and someone had stolen the locket that Octavia gave to him that had her parent’s picture and wedding date in. I feel the author made this book very cleverly and different than most other authors. I was for sure that Edmond was dead when they had said a man with a golden locket had died but really someone just stole the locket and he was alive all the time. I feel joyful about this because now Octavia can be happy and enjoy her youth at the same time.
In chapter twelve we see once again Ender’s instinct to win for all time during a battle. Even with the odds stacked against him, Ender defeated Bonzo’s army. Ender realizes that Bonzo, if he didn’t already, hates Ender to his core, “this would surely turn his rage murderous […] Bonzo will be thirsting for blood now” (195). Petra attempts to warn Ender that he is in danger but, he already knows this. All five of his platoon leaders escort him to his room that night. When he arrives, he finds that Dink has left him a message of warning, “Don’t ever be alone. –Dink” (205). In the short story The Locket, it is believed that the author Chaplains writing style has kept the readers guessing throughout the story. Many would agree that the ending of the story was a shocker and few expected that conclusion. They would agree that the father-in-law proceeding with the funeral arrangements supporting the assumption the deceased person in the coffin was Edmund because he had the locket around his neck played into the authors plot twist. People would also say that the end of the story was intriguing, especially when Octavia opened the letter from the priest, returning her locket to her expressing his sorrow of the death of her husband Edmund. Only to find out at the very end Edmund was not dead and he was waiting for her at the door.
Four confederate soldiers where talking over the fire while waiting for orders from Edmond. Edmond had on a necklace and the other soldiers noticed and asked about it. Edmond told them it was a catholic token to protect him from danger, and it has protected him the whole time he's been at war. He told them that Octavia had given it to him. The locket contained a picture of he parents and the date they were married. Later that evening war broke out and a clergyman walked into the aftermath of the war trying to save the souls of people that may be alive. He saw a soldier with a locket and tore it away from him. He sent the locket with a letter to whoever was closest to the person that the locket belonged to.
In the beginning Edmond was a highly ranked soldier and was untouchable throughout the entire war. When one of the other soldiers found out that his way of staying alive might be because of his locket they stole it and wore it so that he wouldn’t die.
The ending from the Locket caught me by surprise. It was unexpected because the story begins while in combat as Ned is reading the letter. While reading the letter he was remembering the way that Octavie was dressed and how she took off the locket and gave to him so that he would be or feel safe while in combat. Personally I thought that this was their last good-bye and they were now being separated for good. The Locket is a short story about a young couple and true love for one another.
They call me Jake the Thief. And at this moment the thing furthest from my mind is to sound preachy, when I ask, have you ever studied the different epochs of history, since the beginning of time. And try as you might, to assemble the information in a way that made sense and regardless of how you assemble the facts they demonstrate over and over again how the ruling upper class of societies dominated the lower class as well as the working class, and that they created the middle class merely as a buffer zone to separate the haves from the have nots. Furthermore, it’s blatantly obvious that whenever, the middle class chose to revolt against the oppressive ruling class they formed the lower class and working class into terrorizing mobs by baiting
The locket was believed to provide protection from evil. “"What's that you got around your neck, Ned?" asked one of the men lying in the obscurity.” Another question was asked. "Is it your sweet heart's picture?" "`Taint no gal's picture," offered the man at the fire. “"That's a charm; some kind of hoodoo business that one o' them priests gave him to keep him out o' trouble. I know them Cath'lics. That's how come Frenchy got permoted an never got a scratch sence he's been in the ranks. Hey, French! aint I right?" Edmond looked up absently from his letter. “"What is it?" he asked.”Aint that a charm you got round your neck?" "It must be, Nick," returned Edmond with a smile. "I don't know how I could have gone through this year and a half without

In the beginning of the story, a group of soldiers were sitting around a campfire when one soldier asked Edmond what he was wearing around his neck. Edmond replied with,”It’s a locket my beloved Octavie gave me. “ One soldier said that it must give him protection, since Edmond had never been injured.
At first it was confusing to me to figure out who the dead man at the beginning actually was because the ending actually shocked me with the outcome. The Locket refers to love and war, this topic completes the story structuring it into what it is now. Octavie holds a locket close to her heart reminding her of Edmond who is described as her love but is later assumed dead causing Octavie to be dressed in all black which means she was either getting ready for his funeral or mourning over the death of Edmond.
Can one simple locket really have so much meaning to someone? In the Kate Chopin’s short story, “The Locket”, she tells a story of love and mourning. Even though there are a lot of ups and down Edmond and Octavie’s love stays strong. Throughout the story, she portrays many themes that foreshadow the ending. These themes are love, lose, and possession.
In the story "The Locket" the ending was mysterious and unpredictable. Throughout the whole story there was a lot of mystery, and suspense that would make you want to keep reading. The story had a plot twist from the beginning, starting with Edmond being very discrete about his locket, and made you wonder what did it truly symbolize. Although the story contained a lot of mystery, some of the details in the story led me to believe that Edmond was still living and that Octavie was not going to be alone forever.
Like many short stories “The Locket” has a plot twist that occurs at the end of the narrative, for the reason of destroying any assumptions made by the readers or the characters within the story. Many feelings are tossed around while reading letting you either give in to believing Edmond is dead or make your own assumptions of the story. The surprising and unpredictable ending held you waiting in suspense for what was to resolve after being deceived by Chopin’s great attention to detail.
