Leadership levels Leadership begins with the desire to improve something and with an idea how to make improvements, whether it is making physical things, accomplishing a mission or rearing children. To learn leadership, you first need to learn to be an individual contributor and follow. I learned that in the Army’s basic training which provided the basic issues that causing people to be motivated to do what you want them to do when normally they would make other choices. The first year in the army was growing from following to leading in small steps ending with becoming an officer almost exactly one year after I was inducted into the Army. In today’s Army, there are three levels of Leadership. We are going to talk about Direct and Organizational levels of the Army leadership. Direct leadership starts at the lowest level with the team leader of which has the most direct influence with Soldiers. Organizational Leaders have a staff to help them make decisions on a daily basis and provide the resources for the direct leaders to accomplish their mission. After 13 years of conflict, Mission Command could not have not even been more important than it is now. Both Direct and Organizational leaders must provide their subordinates intent and purpose in order for them to operate with in Mission Command.
"Leadership is the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation to accomplish the mission and improve the organization" (Mills, 2013). The Army measures its leaders by their attributes and their core leader competencies. Also, a leader must be able to train, coach and mentor their subordinates. Additionally, the Army has three levels of leadership: Direct, Organizational, and Strategic. An effective leader understands and practices these qualities at an operational level.
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
There are a variety of ways to define both leader and leadership. There is not, however, a clear definition of how to become one. There is no set list of mandatory traits, either innate or learned, that a person must embody to be considered successful or proved a failure. What I feel it takes is the right mix of strengths and weaknesses in a given situation to demonstrate effectiveness. No one person has abilities without accompanying deficiencies. It’s all in the way they are balanced. The balance in the way one uses his or hers’ abilities will ultimately determine the type of leadership one has throughout time. My personal experiences of leadership started when I was younger, roughly 7 years old, I was elected the captain of my travel soccer team. At the time I didn’t think much of it, nor did I have any extra duties that I was explicitly told that I needed to perform. Later throughout the season, I started to notice my teammates mimicking my styles and techniques and I highly enjoyed this feeling of being looked up to. I didn 't realize until years after that the recognition and pride I felt was leadership. This privilege of being captain was the first time I had realized that people weren 't necessarily following my actions because I was extraordinarily skilled, but because I provided this role model status with my confidence and encouragement. The United States of America has the greatest Army in the world. This is possible because the Army develops the great leaders. To be a successful leader, one must fully understand how all three levels of leadership operate. The three levels of leadership outlined by ADRP 6-22 Army Leadership are direct, organizational, and strategic. Non-commissioned officers (NCOs) and officers alike have the responsibility to lead Soldiers regardless of the level they may operate. A leader’s rank does not classify what level of leadership they work in, their position does.
Leadership is a personal skill that has to be developed and improved upon daily, just like an athlete works on his craft. We all come from different walks of life and that is often a factor in the way our leadership styles are shaped. I believe that Leadership is an art, the art to get others to follow and accomplish a common goal or task in a harmonic manner. A leader can be shown in all kinds of shapes and forms.
