Do we really know all of the facts about Macbeth solely based on Shakespeare 's play? Shakespeare took great liberties with the material in Raphael Holinshed’s series called, Holinshed’s Chronicles, altering it to suit his dramatic purposes (McGraw, 306). Most of the information in the play, The Tragedy of Macbeth is based off of Holinshed’s books, therefore, Macbeth is portrayed extremely different in the play than he actually was in reality. Macbeth was born in c. 1005 at Alba, Scotland. His parent’s names’ are Findlaech mac Ruaidri and Doada. Macbeth’s father was Mormaer of Moray until he was killed by his cousin’s, Malcolm and Gillecomgain, which was possibly brought on by Findlaech being too close to Malcolm II. His mother was the second daughter of Malcolm II (bio.com). Macbeth married Gruoch, also mentioned by the name of Lady Macbeth in the play, and she had a son named Lulach, which made him Macbeth’s stepson (Heydt, 55-7). Macbeth died on August 15, 1057 at Lumphanan, Scotland. He was buried in the Holy Isle of Iony, which was where many of the Scottish kings were buried (bio.com). When Macbeth’s father was murdered, he disappeared for a while because he was not mature enough to take on that kind of responsibility so someone else took his place until he was able to make rational decisions on his own and until he was mature enough to carry on his father’s legacy by taking on the title of Mormaer of Moray (Heydt, 55-7). Around 1032, Macbeth returned, and was
Macbeth started off a great and noble man of Scotland and was honoured by the king and his people. He was thought of as a great man and brave among the
Macbeth is a play rife with tragedy. Written by William Shakespeare most probably in the year 1606, the play was very loosely based on somewhat true events. The play focuses on Macbeth’s rise to power, and then his subsequent demise shortly thereafter. Macbeth's ambitions were too big, and the choices that he made were the wrong ones. If he had never chosen to kill the King, then he would not have been killed in return. And while prophecies were made that predicted what would happen, Macbeth was the one that set them into motion, and he was the only one responsible for his own death.
The historical Macbeth had become king in the year 1040 when he killed the previous king, Duncan, in battle. To put this in a historical context, this is hardly the Middle Ages; it's still the Dark Ages, as historians have termed the various stages of European history. It is 26 years before the Norman invasion of England, which is generally considered to be the beginning of the medieval period in Britain. In 1040 Macbeth became king and ruled for 17 years until he was overthrown and killed by Duncan's son, who became King Malcolm III. Malcolm is famous primarily because he married an English princess named Margaret who was later made a saint. According to the Scottish historian Archibald Duncan, little is known about Macbeth and his lovely wife Grunnich, except that they were pious and endowed a religious house at St. Andrew's (which is probably the caddy shack on the fourth green of that famous golf course -- joke). The couple went on a religious pilgrimage to Rome where, the chroniclers said, "they sowed money like seed." (Many of us when we go on vacation do the same thing.) That's all we know for certain about the real Macbeth.
In the first act, Macbeth met the witches whose prophecies claimed Macbeth would be made thane of Cawdor and eventually King of Scotland. At the same time, they claimed Banquo, who was with Macbeth, would be the father of kings. Shortly after, Macbeth and Banquo were greeted by two noblemen who announced that King Duncan had appointed Macbeth the new thane of Cawdor for his brave actions. Macbeth became consumed with the witches’ premonitions. Their vision for the future coupled with his ambition drove Macbeth to make choices that ultimately destroyed him. With significant influence from Lady Macbeth, he decided to take action and murder King Duncan. As part of their plan, they get the King’s attendants drunk so they’d black out then they could blame them for the murder. Macbeth ends up killing them the next morning when Duncan’s murder is discovered, pretending he is enraged by their crime. When Macbeth sees the ghost of Banquo, he decides to visit the witches again. More prophecies are cited including that Macbeth must beware of Macduff. When Macbeth learns Macduff fled to England to meet up with Malcolm, King Duncan’s son, he orders Macduff’s wife and children killed to tame his anxieties. This ultimately led to his demise as Macduff sought revenge and ends up killing Macbeth in battle. This choice of blood and battle to feed his ambitions of
In the story Macbeth, Shakespeare plays the puppet master. He uses witches as a connection between the supernatural and human world. Macbeth is initially described as a valiant and supposedly loyal warrior for his king Duncan. However this quickly changes as the plot unfolds. The witches show a mirror image of Macbeth’s future to Macbeth himself and this is when his true identity begins to emerge. The actions he carries out lead him to power as a king but also to his death. Through this Shakespeare manage to implant a key question in the readers’ minds: what determined Macbeth’s fate? As we learn from reading the book excuses seem to be Macbeth’s hobby and become increasingly more common the further
Macbeth killed the King and waited for nature to take its course. Once when everybody realized that King Duncan was dead, Macbeth was named King shortly after. Being King and having all of the power over Scotland was great for Macbeth, but the guilt also was getting heavier and heavier on his shoulders. He began to realize that would he had done was a major mistake and he shouldn’t of listened to his wife. When he questioned if he would fail his attempt to kill the king he should have backed down but Lady Macbeth said some convincing words, “We fail?
