In William Shakespeares Macbeth, psychosis, hallucinations and pride are a major characteristic shown in each character. The main characters that show these characteristics were Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, particularly with the murder of King Duncan. The question being, who is more responsible Lady Macbeth or Macbeth? There are reasons to believe both sides, but it is more believable that Lady Macbeth was the prime cause because she pressured Macbeth to commit the act of regicide just so he could be higher in power because he was runner up.

In the Shakespeare play, Macbeth, Macbeth is responsible for all the deaths in the play because Macbeth didn’t have to do anything about the prophecies, he could have chosen not to kill King Duncan, and Macbeth decided all on his own to have Macduff’s family killed.

She brings out the worst in him and encourages him to kill King Duncan. She persuades him by constantly telling him negative things to get MacBeth to believe that he is doing the right thing. “Look like th’ innocent flower, but be the serpent under ’t” (Shakespeare 35). Lady MacBeth is the one who tells MacBeth to be this vicious creature and makes him think that killing King Duncan is okay. Because of Lady Macbeth’s behavior, MacBeth was led to become a murderer. Macbeth should not be held accountable for his actions since Lady MacBeth is the one who convinced him to commit the crime that started his madness and turn him into a monster.

Although humans are influenced by the close people around us, we are ultimately judged by our individual actions. In other words, it was Macbeth’s own actions that are responsible for his downfall. In the play Macbeth, Shakespeare exemplifies that Macbeth’s mental condition is to blame for his downfall. Shakespeare explores this theme and conflict through various examples such as Macbeth’s relationships with the three witches, Duncan, and Banquo.

In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth contributed to the murder of King Duncan and the murders that follow. Macbeth is known for his bravery and courage as a soldier on the battlefield, and as a solider he is very familiar with killing people, which we later see throughout the play. This shows that Macbeth is solely responsible for the murders he commits throughout the play. Although, Macbeth may seem totally responsible for these murders, other characters actions in the play including Lady Macbeth, the witches, and himself led Macbeth to his downfall.
