The Transformation of a Hero
“Life asks us to try things, make mistakes, and commit to a path of growth and maturity. Anyone can get old, but growth only comes with effort and commitment” said Phillip Humbert. Humbert tells people that the only way to grow and transform is by trying new things. One example of the path is the hero’s journey, which is a procedure of events that lead to a change in a person. This is what happens to the hobbit J.R.R. Tolkien establishes in his fantasy novel, The Hobbit. Bilbo Baggins is a well-to-do hobbit that is not keen on adventure and enjoys the comfort and safety of his home. Bilbo is just an ordinary hobbit living peacefully under the hill in his hobbit- hole until he is asked to join an adventure. He has two adverse personality traits from his ancestors and experiences dissonance between the contradictory characteristics. One of his ancestors are the Baggins, who are respected people and never do anything unexpected and don’t have adventures. On the other hand, he also possesses traits from his Took ancestors, who love adventure, but are less respected even though they are richer. One day Gandalf asks Bilbo to join him on a quest to retrieve jewels from a dragon’s cave. Bilbo immediately declines the offer, but begins to contradict his own thinking which leads him to eventually join the voyage to the Lonely Mountains. Bilbo’s Took side proved dominant over his Baggins side
Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit that enjoys a peaceful lifestyle. Hobbits like to stay indoors and smoke their pipes and they do not like socialize. Hobbits do not like adventure or socializing with unfamiliar creatures. When he was asked to go on the adventure with the dwarves, Bilbo was taken out of his comfort zone and into the world of a hero. Bilbo goes from hobbit to a hero when he helps the dwarves get out of jail, put everyone in a barrel ,and fights spiders.
During a Socratic Seminar about the Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien, many interesting topics were discussed. We spent the majority of the time talking about the main character Bilbo. During the beginning of the book, Bilbo was a very quiet and reserved hobbit. When there was a chance of going on an adventure, though, Bilbo ran out the front door without a second though. We ended up discussing why he did this. People said that Bilbo ran out for the adventure for a number of reasons, however I thought that he did it on pure impulse, and I made sure to make that opinion know. I think that, because of the opinions of the other hobbits, Bilbo was convincing himself that adventures were foolhardy and not worth the effort. However, Bilbo actually loves adventures,
In the beginning of the book, Bilbo is very unsure about his abilities and is not self-confident. He had never gone on an adventure before and wasn’t sure of what he was capable of. As the group faces many challenges, his confidence and courage grew, especially when he fends off the giant spiders. As the novel progresses, his courage grows, until they face their final task and Bilbo must go into the tunnels alone. By this point in the book, he has enough courage to do nearly anything. This conflict can be identified as man v. self. At one point in the book, Bilbo “felt a different person, and much fiercer and bolder in spite of an empty stomach…” (Tolkien 144). This can be connected to the theme of the development of a hero from an ordinary person (or hobbit) because gaining courage is an essential part of becoming a hero. In this novel, there are endless amounts of conflicts, but these are two main conflicts that Bilbo
In conclusion, we can now see that Bilbo is in fact a dynamic character. He gains many qualities he can use in the future, like courage, learning to use his wits, and letting out the adventurous side in him. He used to be almost paranoid, to himself, and strict. But now he has turned into something much bigger, an adventurer. So the adventure changed him for the better. This is how Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit we thought would never do anything
Do you ever wonder what kind of person you are? Are you adventurous, perseptive, athletic? Have these traits ever affected your decision making? Because in “The Hobbit” By J.R.R. Tolkien, The protagonist Bilbo Baggins feels conflicted whether he should act like his more daring ancestors, the Tooks by embarking on a perilous journey to retake a kingdom. Or to be like his more respectable ancestors, the Bagginses and stay in the comfort of his warm home. As you can see, the traits he has acquired from his forebears are altering the way he sees the situation. Much like Bilbo, I believe that we all have similar sides to our personalities, whether the conflict is to be brave or timid, or smart rather than foolishly. And it is up to us to correctly
In the resound novel “The Hobbit”, written by J.R. Tolkien, the main character Bilbo Baggins has to overcome many power struggles to find out who he really is. Bilbo is one, if not the, most powerful ideological character there ever was in a book. His small stature and uncanny upbringing makes him so important to the concept of power. In the book, the hobbit is the smallest and most quiet race, they keep to themselves and do not like adventure or anything out of their norm. One day a large wizard comes to take Bilbo away on an adventure, he has to choose whether to stay in the norm or take a step outside of it. He chooses to take the leap and uncovers the first step to unlocking his inner power. The reason Tolkien uses a Hobbit as the main character is simple, hobbits are a small, weak creatures who
One little hobbit’s life shall change forever with adventure lurking by for tea. Bilbo displays three archetypes throughout his adventure. One of them is ‘the call to adventure’, where's ‘the Tookish side’ of him awakens, and Gandalf presents Bilbo with an adventure, though without giving him an alternative. A second one is ‘the magic item’, for instance the magic ring. And ultimately, the ‘supernatural aid’ , patently Gandalf for he is a wizard. Bilbo Baggins of Bag End, Under Hill has invariably led a quiet and ‘boring’ life. Well, at least he did until thirteen dwarves came rapping at his door.
In the novel, “The Hobbit” by J.R.R. Tolkien, main character Bilbo Baggins experiences an extensive change in his character throughout the novel. At the beginning of the novel, Bilbo has no care for anything in the world that is outside of the Shire. He is an independent hobbit who keeps to himself and lives an ordinary life in his hobbit hole. He then embarks on an extraordinary journey which opens his eyes to the world as he overcomes multiple obstacles. He proves that any individual can develop heroism when needed to complete a quest no matter who or where you come from. He possesses many characteristics that lead him to being a natural hero, he is courageous, intelligent and loyal.
Bilbo Baggins’ development into a hero becomes one of the main themes in The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien. As a hobbit, Bilbo has always had a comfortable lifestyle in his home in the ground. His ancestry isn’t completely noble to hobbit standards, although his father was from a family with traditional hobbit ways, his mother was from the Took’s family who’re infamous for their un-hobbit-like tendency to go on adventures. Despite his Took’s blood, Bilbo prefers to stay at home and live a quiet life. But his low profile way of living all changes when a visitor appears at his home.
In the novel The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien, the main character, Bilbo Baggins, experiences dramatic change as he leaves his peaceful home to embark on a dangerous quest. Bilbo battles spiders, goblins and trolls hoping to help a company of dwarves reclaim their home from a dragon. He travels across Middle Earth and meets many different people along the way. The situations Bilbo is placed in define many of the elements of the story.
First of all Bilbo is adventurous. Before Gandalf came to his house Bilbo was a simple hobbit that had no intention of leaving his cozy hobbit hole to go on an adventure . For example, After the adventure Bilbo was pumped to go on an adventure but, before the adventure he wouldn’t even had thought of going even near the mountains.
Throughout the entire book, The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins changes pretty drastically. Even though he does not like to travel, he went through an adventure, introducing a whole new world to him. In the beginning of the book Bilbo was described as someone who enjoys just walking around his peaceful, small little home, with his pipe and his food he loves so much. He would rather have other people come see him and he suggested “ I don’t want any adventures, thank you. Not Today.
Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit living an ordinary life in his home of Hobbiton. Other people think his family in particular are not very exciting, “because they never had any adventures or did any-thing unexpected” (3). Except Bilbo does do something exciting. He goes on a very dangerous quest and avoids death. This proves he is a very brave individual. For instance, he shows his bravery when he must follow Gollum throughout the winding tunnels of the mountain in search of an exit. Bilbo finds himself
Whereas before, Bilbo was content with life as he thought the world revolved around him, but now he sees that he actually has a place in the world that goes beyond merely existing as a hobbit. He is able to find out more about himself and is able to better relate to others once he moves out of this narrow frame of mind. In the beginning of the novel, Bilbo lives a very sheltered and empty existence as a hobbit, as he values short-term security over long-term satisfaction with his identity. Starting out, Bilbo owes his identity to being a hobbit, aside from a small bit of his Took
