David Levithan is trying to say that he should have never trusted who he was talking about, and how the person stabbed him in the back.The theme in the book The True Confessions Of Charlotte Doyle is trust; Charlotte Doyle has had issues with trust in the book which just so happens to be the conflict. For example: Trusting the crew, the crew trusting her, trying to get the captain to trust her, and trying to get the captain to trust the crew. The first example of the theme trust, is getting the crew to trust Charlotte. Currently the crew does not trust Charlotte for her recent action of telling the captain about the red robin the crew had made to rebel against the captain. After that Charlotte wanted to prove herself to the crew by becoming one of them, she could tell that at first they weren’t sure of this. The crew also doesn’t trust Charlotte because they saw her carrying a dirk that Zachariah had given her. Later on in the story, Mr. Hollybrass, the second mate, was found dead under the main mast during a storm. He was stabbed in the back and killed with Charlotte’s dirk and he was found holding her handkerchief. A trial was held to accuse Charlotte for killing Mr. Hollybrass. During the trial when the captain asked if anyone wanted to talk on behalf of Charlotte to defend her, no one stood up for her. Sadly, no one
