Every ranch they go to, George just tries to work up a stake and make some money so he and Lennie can live, eat, and sleep. He is the provider of their “family”. Also, Lennie is hurting himself. Every time he does a bad thing, which is very often, he makes himself feel bad. This tortures him because he’s constantly frightened with the fear of not being able to tend the rabbits. While some might think this is a motivation for Lennie to be good, it isn’t, because it clearly doesn’t cross his mind until after he’s done the bad thing. Not to mention that fact that he is

Lennie is an innocent, unknowing of what's going on around him type of person. All he really knows is that he likes things that feel soft and that is what ends up getting him kill. He is so focused on not having George mad at him and not letting him tend to the rabbits that he accidentally kills Curley's wife. “"Don't you go yellin'," he said, and he shook her; and her body flopped like a fish. And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck.”(xx) Lennie just killed Curley's wife and he has done a lot of bad things but never murdered someone. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is about two men, George and Lennie who travel from ranch to ranch hoping to make enough money to buy their own land. Buying the land is what George and Lennie talk about constantly, this is in fact their American Dream. They have recently left a town called Weed because of an incident that happened there and are now heading to Soledad to work on another ranch. John Steinbeck was successful in making Lennie a sympathetic character because he portrays Lennie as a big strong muscular man that has basically no brain, so he doesn’t really know his own strength so when he hurts someone or does something bad you can’t really blame him.
Good friendships make life easier. Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, is about two men, George and Lennie, who go on various journeys in order to get a job. Although George would consider Lennie to be his closest friend, he ultimately ends up shooting and killing Lennie. George did this, not out of hatred, but rather out of protection. A good friend will always want what is best for one another. Steinbeck uses his protagonists’ friendship in order to show that true friendship can help make any of life’s hardships less difficult.
George denied how dangerous Lennie had become and eventually it came back to bite him. As it is explained in the poem ‘Harlem’ by Langston Hughes, things suppressed will eventually explode. When a problem is ignored, then left to the catalyst, it will then be brought to action. This is exactly what happened with Lennie. George ignored Lennie’s dangerous ignorance, then allowed him to be around unstable people, and as a result: Lennie harmed someone else when provoked.

Friendship is one of the cornerstones of civilization; it has been since the beginning of humankind. People throughout history rely on one another for survival, compassion, and a sense of belonging to something even greater in life. Friends bring out the best in one another, or in other cases, the worst. They open up the doors into each other’s innermost being. They guard the other’s deepest secrets and fears. This intimacy between friends leaves them more vulnerable; it creates a relationship that leaves them susceptible to hurt or anguish. These characteristics of friendship are prominent in John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men. Through the two main characters, George and Lennie, in the novel, Steinbeck shows just how deeply these characteristics of friendship affect people. George and Lennie’s interactions with one another show how their friendship has left them vulnerable to one another, yet how it also adds significance, both good and bad, to the other’s existence.

While both are the complete opposite in everything they do, George looks after Lennie and takes care of him. Although George claims Lennie to 'Hold him back' He just keeps taking care of Lennie. I believe this is because of the motif John Steinbeck uses throughout his stories. It speaks of saving another's life and taking responsibility afterward. George will always care for Lennie because it's his responsibility to do so, which is why he is drawn to him.
