Bram Stoker uses secondary sources all throughout his novel in order to enhance the novel. He inserts a number of journal entries, newspaper articles, etc. instead of using a narrative point of view. By doing this, he has helped the reader understand more about what is going on, almost as if they are getting a behind-the-scenes view on the story, emotionally and physically. If Stoker had only used a narrative point of view, the reader wouldn’t know the character’s thoughts, emotions, or anything they were feeling at that moment. The person telling the story wouldn’t be able to tell exactly what was going through the character’s head; they would only be able to give an overview. It automatically gives the story an eerie feel by the way he explains the people and surroundings on his trip. This journal entry was significant in setting up the feel and plot of the story.
Another example of an important journal entry was when Mina would write about being scared of what was happening to Jonathan. To his face and to other people, Mina would present herself as though she wasn’t worried at all about Jonathan being away at Castle Dracula; however, in her journals she wrote her true emotions, which told an opposing story. This gave the reader an insight into what she really thought. In her journal, she couldn’t conceal what she was feeling at the moment, and without knowing her true emotions, the reader might have missed out on valuable points. This could have easily happened had the story been told from a narrative point of view.
Letters also play a major part in the story. Mina and Lucy continuously write letters back and forth about dissimilar situations they are encountering at the time. They often told each other things that the reader would never know had it not been coming straight from them. While they are writing back and forth, it keeps them linked within the novel. The author didn’t have to keep going back and forth telling what each character was doing at the time; he just let their letters tell. Throughout the novel Dracula, the text prominently features the ‘uncanny.’ In literature and other texts, the uncanny refers to an unfamiliarity that is frightening familiar. It’s presence in Dracula is obvious as we and the novel characters see Dracula as uncanny. Both appropriations of Dracula, Nosferatu (1922) and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), reflect their context and hence reflect the values, idea and themes prominent in their context. Nosferatu resembles its isolated German Expressionist Cinema context through its jewish propaganda portrayed by many techniques, most notably its heavy use of dramatic lighting. The journal entries also give a very personal view of the events unfolding, and the reader reads the lines often times as if they were written as the events unfold, for example in Harker’s final journal entry before escaping the castle he writes: “As I write this there is in the passage below a sound of many tramping feet and the crash of weights being set down heavily, doubtless the boxes, with their freight of earth.” (Stoker, pg. 44) This gives the reader a very unique perspective, as if it were true events that had actually happened. The book also incorporates news stories of various events occurring during the time of the story, as it demonstrates how the events in the story affect not only the lives of the main characters but those throughout the land as well. This also gives it a level of realism as well.
Gothic literature is dominated by gothic horror, for instance dark and mysterious objects or events. It is a type of literature that combines fiction, horror, and romanticism. As Bram Stoker wrote his famous novel, Dracula he makes sure to include many different characteristics of gothic literature. Three important motifs that are stated in Dracula which also fit into the gothic literature category would be; blood, dreaming or nightmares, and superstition. This particular novel has many gothic motifs, but these are three that I believe really stand out.
Walton, the narrator of the first ten chapters narrates in a very unique way: writing letters. Walton talks about the “expression of wildness, and even madness,” and bases his side of the story off of it.

This novel was released in the Victorian era, which saw his type of writing as equivalent to the devil. This era was a long time of peace and bright minded people. Stockers style surprised many readers, because he always has you thinking it can’t get any darker than it is but it always exceeds the previous twisted situation or event. Vampires have been around for centuries, they represent the fear of many things such as sexuality, race, gender, etc. and above all, they stand for the fear of diseases. Vampires have once been the symbol of horror due to their terrific depictions and were described as a threat to the humanity. Throughout time, the image of vampire has changed dramatically from a monstrous, inhumanely creature that doesn’t belong to human society to such an attractive and adaptive figure that expresses more of the human side than the evil. Bram Stoker's Dracula is highly acclaimed and has received many different interpretations which deal with complex symbolisms and metaphors. These interpretations often require a great deal of knowledge in psychology, political science, anthropology, and other non-literary disciplines. These interpretations may be valid, as they are related to the disciplines on which their arguments are based, but the true power of the novel is due to a very simple theme that lies beneath the other, more convoluted interpretations. Bram Stoker’s Dracula does not follow the norm of the nineteenth century novels, that is, it is not written in a straightforward narrative but instead comprises of a collection of letters, journal entries and diary scrawls. Apart from that, it also includes a ship's log, numberless clippings from newspaper and also, a "phonograph diary.” This form of writing invariably helps in developing the “mystery” aspect of this horror novel since it either gives us no information about a particular thing or gives us information from various points of view so that it is impossible for the readers to come to one conclusion and they keep playing with different possibilities in their minds.
