The Uttarakhand Tragedy In June 2013, a multi-day cloudburst centered on the North Indian state of Uttarakhand caused devastating floods and landslides in the country's worst natural disaster since the 2004 tsunami. Though some parts of Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh in India, some regions of Western Nepal, and some parts of Western Tibet also experienced heavy rainfall, over 95% of the casualties occurred in Uttarakhand. As of 16 July 2013, according to figures provided by the Uttarakhand government, more than 5,700 people were "presumed dead."] This total included 934 local residents. Destruction of bridges and roads left about 100,000 pilgrims and tourists trapped in the valleys leading to three of the four …show more content…
Activists of political and social organizations are also involved in the rescue and management of relief centres. The national highway and other important roads were closed to regular traffic. Helicopters were used to rescue people, but due to the rough terrain, heavy fog and rainfall, maneuvering them was a challenge. By 21 June 2013, the Army had deployed 10,000 soldiers and 11 helicopters, the Navy had sent 45 naval divers, and the Air force had deployed 43 aircraft including 36 helicopters. From 17 June to 30 June 2013, the IAF airlifted a total of 18,424 people - flying a total of 2,137 sorties and dropping/landing a total of 3,36,930 kg of relief material and equipment. On June 25, one of 3 IAF Mil Mi-17 rescue helicopters returning from Kedarnath, carrying 5 Air Force Officers, 9 of the NDRF, and 6 of the ITBP crashed on a mountainous slope near Gauri Kund, killing all on board. The deceased soldiers were given a ceremonial Guard of honour by Home minister Sushilkumar Shinde at a function organised by the Uttarakhand State Government. ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------- Aftermath Prime Minister of India undertook an aerial survey of the affected areas and announced 1000 crore (US$160 million) aid package for disaster relief efforts in the state. Although there are no estimates of casualties at this time, the infrastructure has sustained massive damage. Power, water, and sanitation will be unavailable indefinitely, and basic needs such as food and shelter will be needed for 1.5 million people displaced by the earthquake. As strategists for an international response team, you are responsible for developing a broad response strategy. As strategists for the response team, you must determine how to allocate the available resources for the relief effort. Using the list below, decide what percentage of available resources will be applied to each of the categories. Remember, your total must equal 100%.
Beyond the immediate human instinct of protection and concern for one another, the emergency finally passed. People began to unpack the boots of their cars full of family photographs, essential documents and survival gear as to embark on the journey of recovery and return to
We are currently conducting a full investigation of the situation and all personnel involved. The US military and local authorities are doing everything in their power to prevent another similar occurrence. Our priority is safety, while maintaining force protection and security throughout this recovery mission.
A flood can be defined in many depths but is simply water where it isn’t wanted. In late 2010 Queensland was affected by major flash flooding this continued on into the beginning of 2011 and ¾ of Queensland was declared a disaster zone.
This incident is a disaster. According to the text a disaster “disrupt social interaction and interrupt the ability of major community systems to afford reasonable conditions of life” (Edwards & Goodrich, 2012, pp. 34) The information provided does not include deaths, injuries, buildings, and other infrusture incidents. “A presidentially declared disaster, the federal government pays at least 75% of the emergency response costs under the Stafford Act, and additional public assistance funds are available for the restoration of public facilities.” (Edwards & Goodrich, 2012, pp. 35)
There were a lot of cleanup workers and volunteers who were working to elevate the chaotic and unsafe situation. Some the things that should be considered when thinking about health and safety of the volunteers and cleanup workers are first and foremost the potential risks in the department that they are working in. For clean up workers, that could be the level of toxic waste that they could be exposed to while in the field. The responsible parties should brief the people who are involved as cleanup workers, researchers, volunteers and even visitors about the possible toxicological effects which could cause damage to their respiratory system, neurological system, as well as cause damage to other functions of the body. Furthermore, since the area was hot and humid, the responsible party should also adopt ways to make clean up efforts easier as well as not over work the hired crew members. In terms of making various considerations to people involved in relief efforts, in my personal opinion, I think the responsible parties and the government should provide better health insurance packages for people working closely with affected area. I think it is imperative to do so because they are the ones exposing themselves to potential health issues both mentally and physically in the
Bangkok lies above the Gulf of Thailand, making it prone to flooding. The city is also prone to flooding due to being situated on natural flood plains that has many networks of canals for transportation and irrigation. In 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami killed over 1,000 people and damaged property, hitting the west coast of southern Thailand. Devastating floods occurred in Bangkok during the 2011 monsoon season, triggered by the landfall of the severe Tropical Storm Nock-ten. As the floods spread, they took the lives of over 800 and caused property damage of over $45 billion. Hamnett & Forbes (2013, p. 278) have provided 4 scenarios of likely impacts from technical studies, which are as
In emergency situations, the top priority is protecting affected victims. The government will send out doctors, troops, and other
disaster zone and it was said that 3 quarters of the state was affected. Over 40 people lost their lives and around 2.38 billion dollars worth of damage
Imagine walking outside your front door and there being a dead body on your front lawn well that could have happened if you lived in Hardin,Missouri 1993. The reasoning for this is because a huge storm caused Missouri river to overflow. The rain started in the spring and ended in the fall. The floodwater covered over 20 million acres of land. Fifty people died from this and 55,000 homes were either damaged or destroyed. The great flood of 1993 is one of the worst natural disasters costing more than 15 billion dollars in damage! This is the craziest part, coffins begin to break open. The remains spread as far as 18 miles away! There were at least 600 residents buried in the Hardin
In recent years, American Red Cross has been under major scrutiny following allegations of mishandling and misappropriating millions of dollars for relief efforts. It is extremely troubling for a country to be blindsided by an unexpected earthquake, hurricane and/or terrorist attack. While it is troubling to endure life’s mishaps, it is even more devastating to learn that the governmental supported relief that is needed is lacking in communication and distribution. The pain the victims must sustain is unbearable beyond measures and heartbreaking at the same time.
Since 2004, there has been a number of massively destructive events. In 2004, the Asian Boxing Day tsunami killed approximately 230,000 people across 14 countries. In 2010, floods in Pakistan directly affected around 20 million people and have continued to displace substantial numbers each year. During 2011 and 2012, more than 12 million people in the Horn of Africa were severely affected in what has been called the worst drought in 60 years. In the beginning of March 2014, the Ebola outbreak in West Africa led to 11,310 deaths across Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea (WHO,
This was a noteworthy surge occasion that proceeded for no less than two eras, which brought about extraordinary populace relocations among different fiascos, for example, tempests and starvation. This is generally dated to the third thousand years B.C.E amid the rule of Emperor Yao.

Floods can be a huge threat anywhere in the United States that experiences large volumes of precipitation, ocean waves coming on shore, when snow melts at a fast rate, or when dams or levees break (U.S. Department of Commerce, National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, and Office of Oceanic & Atmosphere Research). In the United States, floods kill about 140 people a year (National Geographic Partner, 2017) “The catastrophic flooding in Houston from Hurricane Harvey is the latest reminder that floods kill more people in the United States than any other type of natural disaster and are the most common natural disaster worldwide (Lam, 2017).”
