“A Gothic horror story of quite exceptional quality...macabre, bizarre and...quite impossible to put down.”
The above quote is the response of the Financial Times to the best-selling novel, “The Wasp Factory”, and in my opinion, truer words were never spoken. I myself had to force the book out of my hands in the early hours of the morning on several occasions. This clearly says something about the sheer power of Iain Bank’s debut novel. Whether you love it or hate it, once you have read the first page you are instantly struck by it’s brilliance. Throughout this essay, I intend to explore the mind and characteristics of the main character, Frank Cauldhame.
Throughout the story, Frank’s character is brought out through his experiences, of

He in fact likes his brother, and got on well with him, so you may ask why then did he feel the need to dispose of his brother. Well, according to Frank, the main reason that he and his brother always got on so well was because he “knew from an early age that he was not long for this world,” so Frank had tried to make his time as enjoyable as possible. Paul is killed by a German bomb that was uncovered by a powerful storm the night before Paul met his tragic end. However, right up to the end, Frank is very kind to Paul. His death is quick and painless. Frank tells Paul that the bomb is a bell, and if he hits it hard enough, a sound will come out. So, Frank runs to the top of a nearby dune, Paul hits the bomb, it explodes, and Frank’s murder tally rises to two. Frank’s main reason for killing his brother at this time is that he feels that finding the bomb is not only an opportunity, it is a symbol, a sign that he must obey.
So now to Franks third and final murder, that of cousin Esmerelda. The reason that Esmerelda dies could be seen as petty by many people, but to Frank, it is valid. Frank kills Esmerelda because she is a girl. He feels that, since he has already killed two boys, he owes it to the world to balance it out a bit, and Esmerelda is the unfortunate female that has been chosen to be disposed of. The most interesting detail about the murders that Frank has committed is that he
He then goes to the hospital to see Deborah Ann Kay and is deeply affected by it. He feels this is his chance to do something right and wants to provide fair justice for her instead of just taking the money. He doesn’t take the settlement or tell the Donaheys about it which he is supposed to tell them. He also stole mail from Maureen Rooney to get ahold of Kaitlin Costello Pryce. Frank did all of this because the end would justify the means. Even though some of the things he did weren’t right he wanted to do the right thing by providing justice for Deborah Ann Kay.
The industrial revolution began in the 17th century and made significant change in the world. An era was over and the new one was beginning. The revolution has advantages and disadvantages. Rising of living standards, improving of health, lifetime and trade system are its advantages. On the other hand, manufacturing has caused major problems such as deforestation, excessive use of fossil fuel sources, irresponsible industrialisation and agricultural development. These changes have increased world’s atmospheric concentration of water vapour, CO2, CH4 and other gases (Stocker, 2013). These gases capture part of energy receiving from sun and trap this heat inside atmosphere that causes rising temperatures on the earth’s surface. Naturally, for continuation of life these gases are necessary, but result of the human events these gases has produced more than plants and environment need (Robins, 2016). Also, we call them Green Houses Gases because they have the similar effect like the ‘greenhouses’ utilised to increase condition of vegetables.
When, much to his surprise, he discovers how the lake in the woods was still the same, how the bedroom still smelled of lumber, how the girls were still fifteen, as if “no years have gone by” and the only thing that changed was the man. That it is his son who sneaks out in the morning to the sweet outdoors now, who explores the streams, who gazes with childish awe at the thunderstorms, who runs out in joy and relief to go swimming in the rain. And that it is time to move on and realise that he can’t relive those moments as the figurative ‘right’ to do so, has moved on to the next generation. That in this moment he can only be the father, no longer the son. “The Brown Wasps” has the writer experiencing sorrow and despair due to a place, that is primary to his being, being non-existent and thus, the essay focuses more on the effects of time on the world around the man, rather than the man
In the story “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, he shows how the boys lost all innocence and civilization. The boys went from having innocent child minds to taking lives of other people, acting savage, and losing all civilization due to problems on the island. The boys had forgotten where they came from and became savage in order to survive; it was the need of survival that caused the loss of innocence among the boys.
Frank was in the war and got shot in his leg which makes him incapable to walk. The Georgia Flu, caused all the power to be out in the world, making life for Frank a struggle. Frank and his brother Jeevan have stayed in his apartment the whole time and never left because it will be very hard for Frank to live out in the new world and incapable to get him out of the apartment with no electricity. This is when Frank made a moral decision about committing suicide to give Jeevan a better life. “I think there’s just survival out there, Jeevan. I think you should go out there and try to
In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, a group of British boys suddenly become stranded on an island, all alone, forced to form their own social system. Throughout the novel, William Golding reveals his main character 's strengths and weaknesses in their attempts to lead. The character Piggy demonstrates the benefits and limits of intelligence in maintaining civil order.
Society is a man made system that allows humans to have an orderly life, and it is important because of its provision of betterment of the world. It is essential for the world to have an organizational system like society, considering that we would struggle to better our lives without someone to take charge or lead us. Feral children are children who lack exposure to society and its factors. They do not experience society like most people do. Because of this, they tend to act wild and abnormal in comparison to normal social standards. In the book Lord of the Flies, the boys stranded on an island lack an organized society. Without society and social skills, it would be hard to find a way to better lives. We would not feel a need to fix the
Another thing that Frank did that is definitely wrong is that he killed Marie. David couldn’t sleep because he felt like he should tell his parents something, so he goes into their room and tells them, "Uncle Frank. Uncle Frank was here." Another proof that Frank killed Marie is in page 109, Wes arrested
The Industrial Revolution is the name given to the movement in which machines changed people's way of life as well as their methods of manufacturer. It brought three important changes: inventions of machines that simplify and speed up the work of hand tools, use of steam (and other power) versus human power, adoption of a factory system. Workers were brought together under one roof and were supplied machines. The Industrial Revolution began throughout the world relatively during the same time period, and although it had its beginning in remote times, it is still continuing in some places.
According to the movie, Mr. Frank seemed very devastated, and he was trying to hold himself together in order for him to prevent himself from crying because everything was taken from him. All around him were old memories of the past, such as gloves or a scarf of the people that he loved. In the selection, Mr. Frank also says, “I can’t stay in Amsterdam, Miep. It has too many memories for me. Everywhere there’s something... the house we lived in... the school... that street organ playing out there... I’m not the person you used to know, Miep,” especially after all that has happened to him, it would make sense for him to leave. Afterwards, Mr. Frank decided that everything at the Annex should be burned, however, Miep, who was his former secretary, gave him his daughter’s diary, known as The Diary of Anne
By the fall of 1944, half of the ferrying division’s fighter pilots were women. WASPs made three-quarters of the domestic deliveries of all domestic deliveries of fast fighters.
Each death is described thoroughly, which is disturbing as the amount of detail added makes the death somewhat humorous to the reader. When Frank describes his first victim the reader is on franks side as Blyth is presented to a horrible character. However that changes when he describes Paul’s death making the reader against franks. This carries on with Esmeralda who is another innocent victim. Despite the negative changes of what the reader views of frank some may enjoy the way he disposes his
The progress between Elizabeth’s and Darcy’s relationship, in Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice (1813) illustrates and explores several the key themes in the novel. Their relationship highlights class expectations, pride and prejudice, and marriage, and how they play a major role in determining the course of their association. These are outlined through their first prejudiced dislike of each other when they first meet, the stronger feelings for Elizabeth that develop on Darcy’s side, her rejection in Darcy’s first proposal, then her change of opinion and lastly the mutual love they form for one another. Pride and Prejudice is set up as a satire, commenting on human idiocy, and Jane Austen
During Britain’s Industrial Revolution, a multitude of different jobs were opened to the working class of men, women, and children. While this era offered a wide variety of new opportunities for everyone, women were somewhat excluded in areas such as occupation availability and wage due to the cultural norms of the time period.
1. The author, Leslie Chang, contends that “the history of a family begins when a person leaves home”. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Tell why, and then give examples from your own life or from published material outside this book to defend your opinion.
