The White Umbrella Theme Essay Pedro Ruiz Martin Rashad the author of “The White Umbrella” presents to the reader an entertaining story about a Chinese girl who moves to america, and tries to fit in with all the other girls her age. She and her sister both try to keep the embarrassing secret that their mom has a job, but both have a pretty hard time accepting it. Later, the main character finds the most appealing umbrella she’s seen in her life. She gets it, and then throws it into the sewer. The author of the story’s theme is to be grateful for what you have, and you will realize you have everything you need. One of the ways the author conveys this theme is through title. The title conveys the theme by including one of the most important parts of the story, which was when the piano teacher lets the main character have the beautiful umbrella that she wanted. This affected the main character greatly, because she was already upset with her mom for not being there, then the piano teacher gives the umbrella, so then the main character says to the piano teacher” I wish you were my mother.” That’s probably why the author decided to choose that title, because it was such an effective and important moment for the character and the story in general. …show more content…
The author conveys the theme through the main character by what the character says, what do others say about the character, and what is striking about the characters thoughts and actions. Such as, when the main character thought about her mother the way she did, and how she had faith that her mother would come that moment for a while that the main character stood in the rain until her mother arrived. It’s also shocking that the main character threw away the beautiful umbrella that she loved, this means the main character must’ve realized that she really didn’t need the
All three of these themes really helps you go in depth into the story. You realize how many times each of these pop up, which events they popped up in, and how important those events even were. We see you never know the worth of water until the well is dry with Sal as well as Phoebe, maybe even Mrs.Cadaver. When Sal’s mom leaves because she feels rotten in comparison to Sal’s father, we find this is a major event because we now have an insight as to why she left, she didn’t feel perfect, even though she was only human. Sal accepting her mother death was a terrible thing in her life, yet she had to and was also a key event in the story. These themes can all easily be integrated into our modern day society. Such as when you lose a relative, you have to accept their death even if you desperately don’t want to or when said family member dies you don’t realize how much they mean to you. Or with all the stereotypes and expectations we sometimes forget that we’re all only human. Tell people close to you you love them, you’ll never know when you’ll lose them. Make sure they know you appreciate them, but most of all, always know that nobody’s
Another example of theme is in the end of the book. This is when Micheal came back to save all of his friends. ‘ “Hatch is about to hurt our friends, and I need to stop him” ’
The theme is reflected through the people in the book, and events that take place in the
A theme is the author’s underlying message that is expressed in more one word. Some themes can be very similar to each other, an example of this is the two documents I will comparing in this analysis essay; The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and On the sidewalk Bleeding by Evan Hunter. These two stories share similar themes, Don’t judge someone by what they look like, get to know them before you determine their fate. However the authors portray this theme in a different way. One story depicts a young boy who goes through troublesome events in his life before he realizes the moral of his life.
People read countless stories that have a variety of themes in them. When people read “Angela's Ashes” by Frank McCourt, and “The Street” by Ann Petry, they can probably sense that there is something similar among the two stories', and that's because they share a common theme. The theme is how people can persevere through problems that they encounter. The reader will discover this similar theme of persevering through problems with the way the authors utilize the character of characters feelings and personality, the way setting creates a backdrop that establishes the tone of the story, and events that cause conflict to the character.
Authors in many instances use the main elements in the story such as setting and narrative to prove a point in the story. For example, writers often use characters, their actions, and their interaction with other characters to support or prove a theme. In the short story “Our Thirteenth Summer”, Barry Callaghan effectively uses characters to develop the theme that childhood is fragile and easily influenced. One of the ways that Callaghan makes effective use of characters to develop the theme is by describing the tension between Bobbie and his parents. This usage of characters supports the theme because Bobbie’s childhood is no longer free to do what he wishes, but has to bow down to his parents’
For example one of the themes used in the novel is family and relationships the theme is used for forms of relationships between different characters. for example akira and his father never had that close bond relationship between a father and a son for instance o page 18 of the novel akira tells the readers about his view of his father " my father was never a father who put you at ease. I always felt he was more like the school inspector, making sure that you were all in order. " this makes the readers sympathise akira so he can never really converse with his father since Akiras father is 'used to never being questioned or stood up to, Kathryn Lomer had picked her themes in the approved manner for her
Another way to say it is you can't really know someone just by looking at them. Two of the examples of this theme in the book is on pages 136 and 13. On pg. 136 Iggy becomes soft because of what happened to Loretta. He looks like an immense, biker with some anger issues but, when you hurt someone he loves he is a real softie. This proves the theme because just by looking at Iggy, you don’t know the real Iggy. Another example of this theme is on page 13. Max goes over to Kevin to help get his bird machine out of the trees. While he does so, Kevin says, “This is an ornithopter.” (Pg.18) This proves the theme because just by looking at Kevin, you may think he may not be smart or is just weak. If you look at Iggy and Kevin, you would never guess who they actually are. Once you get to know this book, you will know the theme.
When writing about the theme, the writer should keep in mind that he/she will write an analysis of a theme that appears in either a text or movie that argues a specific point. The writer's aim in this type of essay is to pick a theme from a text or movie and write about what that theme does for the story or what that theme makes the reader realize about that story and/or life itself. The best way to come up with such an
The author uses characters to reveal the theme through their thoughts, actions, and views. A piece of evidence that uses character to display the theme is from "Angela's Ashes", "I asked if she would like some tea". This quote is from a point in the story when Angela asked her mother, who has fallen terribly ill, if she is in need of anything even though supplies were limited. Furthermore, the reader can infer that Angela has taken the role of her mother, mostly because she is lacking a father figure to step in, introducing an area of struggle. By making the inference of Angela's role in her family the audience is able to put what troubles she has underwent into perspective, this creates a window for the author to use character to introduce the theme. From the short story, "The Street" the character is found within
How does the author position the reader towards the major theme using the narrative elements?
In “The White Umbrella”, author Gish Jen illustrates the life of a Chinese family living in America, where they don’t fit in. The narrator, a girl who is embarrassed by the fact that her mom works, tries hard to keep it a secret and doesn’t realize how much she needs her until she might be dead. This short story teaches the lesson that you should appreciate the things that already make you happy and not get distracted by what you think will make you happy. Throughout the story, the author shows this theme by the character’s actions, repeating important symbolism, and in the turning point of the story.
To begin with, one major theme that continuously played a part throughout the entire book is desire. To many of the characters, it was the one urge that they could never overcome. One
A theme, by literary definition, is a central topic of a text. This means that they are a always a part of every story. Mainly, themes symbolize the, sometimes hidden, meanings of texts. In one particular story of Ursula K. Le Guin, “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas,” one theme is evident throughout this short story, and it centers around the neglect of morals and ethical beliefs. Throughout the text, this idea of moral neglect is apparent, and the story describes how derelict the ethics of the people of Omelas have become.
In this essay, I will explain to you how the authors use theme, characterization, and tone, to show how your choices have consequences. The first topic I will be talking about is theme. The theme in “The Necklace” is that your choices have consequences. In the story, Mathilda was not careful with the necklace.
