In the short story “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” from the Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, the Wife of Bath tells a story about a knight that falls into a troublesome predicament. The Knight comes across a beautiful maiden one day. Overcome by his lust, he does not think about punishment when he rapes the maiden. Instead of being sentenced to death, he is given a bargain by the Queen. Within a year, he is to find out what is a woman’s most desire. If bought back a suitable answer, the Queen will spare his life. With death staring right at him, he goes on to his adventure. The Knight’s personality and actions lead him to unthinkable consequences. In a result, he is faced with events in his life that he does not have control of. The Knight may be an honorable nobleman, but he is not very intelligent. He does not think about the consequences of his actions. For example, his action against raping the maiden. He is only guided by his desires, without considering how right they are. Because the knight lives only for the present, he also does not think about the punishment that it comes with.
