The word Religion at the definition level brings about many disagreement. It is very difficult to come up with a universal definition of religion. However religion can be defined as a social structure that has a shared, beliefs and rituals that are necessary to bind together the member of a religious group. To some people religion is seen as contributing to the health and continuation of society on a whole. Thus, religion functions to bind society’s members by prompting them to affirm their common values and beliefs on a regular basis. Religion, has a great value of influence on the members of society, so much so that it programs the way people view certain thing in society. For example, an act of murder is automatically viewed as something inhumane and immoral. To further explain this we can remember as a child growing up, being told that stealing is wrong and you should not take something that doesn’t belong to you. If you’re found with something that is not yours, you would probably get punished in some way, so as to learn your lesson to never steal again. As you get older you would view stealing as something wrong because you were nurtured into that. In this same way religion has its way of nurturing individuals to view certain things as wrong or right.

Religion gives that higher power or guiding figures supreme importance and significant to the community which follows. In some sense, religion is the bonding, and sometimes even the controlling,

Definitions of religion tend to suffer from one of two problems: they are either too narrow and exclude many of the belief systems which most people will agree are religious, or they are too vague and ambiguous, leading one to conclude that just about any and everything is actually a religion. Almost all religions around the world are based on a belief. Almost every religion have certain rules and principles that order together within a society: Many people misunderstand and misinterpret the holy texts the Bible, Quran, Torah, and others fabricate. Religion is defined as faith to a higher being who one believes has created us. It has also been used as laws through history to stop the committing of crimes. In many religions, the consequences of breaking rules and regulations of the religion are burning in the pit of hell. Religion is man-made and was created for many reasons but mainly to keep peace and justice in the world. But the words can be manipulated and used as an excuse to start wars on this planet. This caused many to believe that the world would be a better place without religion.
Religion, in some form or another, is the oldest fundamental belief every culture has in common. For a lot of people, it defines a way to live our lives. Religion accentuates the meaning of being good and righteous. It also sentences those of us who are immoral and do wrong. Religion strives to make us better in all that we do in order to reach the highest level so that we live a good life. If we fail in our quest, we may be condemned to Hell, and if we succeed, we may become rewarded by God and allowed to go to Heaven. In a nutshell, this sums up what I have been taught about religion since I was old enough to attend church on Sundays. I believe that religion is more than a black and white issue. If that were the case then everyone around
There are several important ideas and most interesting thoughts that are poised by Smith that communicated to me directly. Some of the most important ideas that Smith depicted were a result of events that he experienced. He was able to observe traits from others who believed they “knew” a religion and he was actually able to explain to them the difference in sentences and phrases that one was able to understand and comprehend. It is important for one to not only study a religion and practice it but for one to be devoted to the religion. Religion is a part of life, and to live you must have religion in your life. In his article he continuously states that he is not defining the religion although he may not realize that he actually is. He is defining the religion as a concept in which an outside reader is able to understand. “The man of religious faith lives in this world. He is subject to its pressures, limited within its imperfections, particularized within one or another of its always-varying
Personally, I have always thought religion is the shared beliefs and practices of human beings. Religion is something that you can put your faith towards and believe in your life. Religion is the belief that that there is something larger than oneself and that you have to answer to for your good and bad deeds in life. There are so many different types of religions and cultures around the world. Religion is often used to label or identify a group of people. This label gives you some idea of people’s beliefs and morals. It defines our lifestyles, such as the way we act or dress, etc. Some people think their religious affiliation automatically predetermines the type of person that they are destined to grow up to be.
According to the American College Dictionary, religion is a noun defined as the quest for the values of the ideal life. This definition is vast and general, allowing for a variety of interpretations by people from all cultures. There is no single path to follow in order to lead an ideal life, only personal beliefs and experiences. Religion is non-finite so there is no way of determining a boundary (Smart, 5). In my quest for a true understanding of what religion is I explored my own traditions and religious beliefs as well as life experiences. Slowly, with the added insight from the text and videos, my own definition of religion has begun to take shape.
What is religion? Each person’s definition of religion is different. Each person’s faith is different. This is a question that has been asked for centuries, and regardless of the answer given there is no right or wrong answer. Religion can be defined as a group of people who have shared beliefs who feel their life has purpose or meaning. This feeling or belief that their life has meaning can come from outside of themselves, as well as within. Taking this one step further, these shared beliefs put into action in the form of worship, can be easily identified because they happen regularly. It can be said the Primal religions were in fact not religions. Some may argue Confucianism is not a religion. Others may say Taoism is not a
The Problem of Definition of Religion The study of religion is problematic. There are so many dimensions to religion (belief, practice, experience, knowledge and consequences) that it is impossible to provide a conclusive definition. Most sociologists do not believe in God. Islam is a religion. A simple statement, but not all together true. A religion, as commonly defined, is an organization or collection of a set of beliefs and practices. To be religious or do to something religiously does not always pertain to the spiritual; the word religion can be used to describe many things. One can do something religiously referring from how they conduct their prayers, to something more trivial as playing video games. Another way to define religion is to describe it as something that is a way of life. Yet, once again, this does not constitute that religion is spirituality. In many parts of the world sports are described as being ones religion, as they are followed and supported with fervor. Another defining factor of religion is that most religions, if not all, have some sort of sacred text or holy relic. However, to a football fan, the Lombardi Trophy which is awarded to the winner of the SuperBowl, can be viewed as a ‘holy’ relic. The idea of something being holy is all rooted in subjectivity; what I consider holy may not be deemed as such by a friend or acquaintance.

My personal definition of religion is that it is a set of beliefs and practices that generally pertain the worship of one or more than one spiritual beings or representations of a spiritual power. Religion can be personal belief or an organization or group of people who have similar beliefs and values. There are many different types of religions in the world and have been since the
