Introduction As international travel becomes cheaper, more and more people go on overseas holidays. The average earliest age at which people first leave their country is declining all over the world. Furthermore the increase in economic ties between countries, especially in Europe, means that many people expect to work in different countries at some stage in their life. In short, the world is becoming a smaller place as international movement increases. One very dramatic sign of this is the high increase in international student exchange. Well over a million young people go abroad to study at a foreign university. Many go from third world to first world countries but a significant number make the journey in reverse. The experience of studying in a foreign country leaves a powerful impression on young people that may last all their lives. For a few the experience is negative and they recall the loneliness and rejection of the foreign country, but for most they experience is very enriching so much so that some people prefer never to return home and to continue living in their new country. As a result of the increase in student movement much has been written on this topic (Jenkins, 1983; Klineberg & Hall, 1979; Kagan & Cohen, 1990; Searle & Ward, 1990). But for thousands of years people have travelled to other lands to trade, teach, learn, convert, settle, and conquer. Long before social scientist ever thought of writing about the topic, accounts of travel have been written by
Having read the story “Me Talk Pretty One Day “, by David Sedaris, reminisced me about my past memories and had the feeling of going back into my past life. Meeting with a people from totally a new world, speaking in a language which you have never heard, and adjusting to a new lifetime had a great impression on me. Life is an interesting appearance with its full of unexpected changes and an interesting adventure. From my point of view, when a person moves abroad, he or she becomes more appreciative of their time in their native country; at least in my experience.
It is a common idea that traveling gives people a greater insight on the dynamics of the world as they experience different cultures and ways of life. This can be seen in the short story Wedding at the Cross by Ngugi wa Thiong’o where traveling greatly influences the main character Wariuki’s outlook of the world. Wariuki starts off as being a very poor but very happy man until he gets humiliated by his father in law, Douglas Jones, for not being wealthy enough to pay for a wedding at a church or provide for his wife. This ignites a fire in Wariuki to prove his Douglas Jones wrong and he goes to great lengths to accumulate enough wealth to become higher class and not be looked down upon. The great lengths that Wariuki goes through to try and
Leaving one's own country and moving to another is one of the most difficult journeys anyone can make. In one's home country, he or she has a place, an identity that is
Those who make a habit out of traveling the world, more often than not, become more of an extrovert than they may have been prior to their many journeys. It is no secret that those who make the choice to travel more often have a bit of extroversion in them, however, even the least social of any group typically find a way out of their shell when traveling. No matter the destination, it is the various interactions with people from foreign backgrounds, beliefs and cultures that present a challenge to the normality that most individuals cling to. These initial interactions create a comfortability, or openness rather, to engage with new people and see humankind through an altered, more optimistic lens than once
This meaning students leave and go to study in another country. So students may ask, why sould they go to another country to study what you can study here? Well first off studying abroad can enhance your professional and financial potential. By learning in another country students may be subject learn the ways of the people of that country. Students studying abroad are experiencing a new culture in first hand also allowing new ideas to flow and showing them things they may never see any other time. Another for students to study abroad is taking advantage of traveling. So many people will not have the opportunity to travel to these exotic places and study something they will live there whole. Studying abroad gives the opportunity to experience the world in a whole new way. Students will be introduced into new customs, religions, and get to see museums and historic landmarks of there location of choice. Also while staying in the country of choice students are not limited to staying in that country. They are allowed to visit neighboring countries as well. For instance,a student is staying in Europe, the student is allowed to travel to Barcelona, Manchester, and Rome. The final reason for studying abroad is for career opportunities. After students come back from there learning experience they will have a new outlook on culture and life perspectives. These attributes give students a bright future from
Throwing oneself into an entirely different culture for a few weeks a year, is one of the most intellectually gratifying things I have come to experience. It exposed me to the fact that there is more to life than meets the eye. Accepting its complexity is almost as important as understanding what makes it complex. My visits to Poland have opened my one dimensional mindset, and allowed for more complicated reasoning. Traveling also forces an individual into strange situations they are unaccustomed to, and shows that not everything can be learned in a classroom. It teaches politics, economy, history, geography and less general things such as the ability to explore, grow, and make mistakes. They are left with the satisfaction of doing things they never knew they could
“The number of Americans studying abroad has tripled over the last 20 years, but, still, fewer than 10 percent of college students study overseas during undergraduate years”. (Kristof) The ideals America has set in response to a changing world has prompted fear in its citizens, who are now unwilling to chase their desire to explore a new land. While the rest of the world has shown an opposite reaction to a changing world as, “Three times as many foreigner’s study in America”. (Kristof) American citizens has become reluctant to chase the desire all humans have to experience something new and this is becoming a problem as “growing numbers of seniors will finance retirement by moving to cheaper countries like Mexico, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica”. (Kristof) Americans that fear traveling to another place to study instead choose to take a language class for four years in their educational institution. “It makes in since to study Spanish in college… it’s more effective to move to Bolivia, study or get a job and fall in love”. (Kristof) It has been proven time and time again that people can learn through a logos path of teaching such as those universities adopt, but if you can learn something through a pathos path of teaching such as moving to another country to study its culture; you will make a much stronger and lasting connections in the brain. “I have a one-question test than people who have lived abroad do better on than those who studied in a classroom… In a foreign language you’ve studied, how do you say doorknob”.
The world has so many different things to contribute when it comes to customs, knowledge, and ways of going about life. If people have the oppurtunity to travel they should take advantage of it. Which is why I want to participate in one of UK’s study abroad programs. Traveling the world has always been something I’ve wanted to do, and what better way to do it then through your education. UK offers so many different programs in so many different areas, I’ll be able to use this study abroad program to not only enhance myself and education, but to also enhance and educate those around me. I’ll be able to learn different customs and expand my knowledge then bring it all back to my home at
Studying abroad, which has become a common phenomenon, can be a fun and meaningful experience. Many university students are interested in studying abroad because it gives them an opportunity to explore different cultures and broaden their horizons. As Mark Sherry, Peter Thomas and Wing Hong Chui argue in “International Students: a Vulnerable Student Population,” the goals that students pursue international study are often to acquire different ways of learning and to improve cross-cultural understanding, which helps them gain self-confidence as well as maturity (33). This experience turns out to be beneficial to those who study abroad. Nevertheless, when students are surrounded by a wholly new environment, many problems that hinder their
Helen Keller’s words resonate deeply with my experience abroad. Do or do not, those were my options, and I chose to do as much as possible. The result becoming one of the most inspiring experiences of my life, despite my having to say my experiences were from a slightly different perspective from the norm, as this was not my first foray into European Culture. Hailing from a culturally diverse family where my mother is Dutch and father is German, I have had many unique opportunities to experience the world. Therefore, any traumatic culture shock upon my entry in Europe as well as upon re-entry in the U.S. factored very little into my study abroad experience. Nevertheless, Europe left its mark in the way that I miss certain daily occurrences that I experienced while I hold no affection towards other things that are commonplace in Europe. Furthermore, there were things that I missed from home that influenced my emotional state upon my return. Altogether, my re-entry into the U.S. has been an interesting, if not wild, experience.
Education is a never-ending learning process that has always been a piece of our life. As education is a building block in our lives, we are eager to put profoundly into our education. Good education will lead us to the bright future. With the fast advancement of public opinion, we have entered an era of information explosion which the necessity of studying abroad has turned into a developing pattern among youth. Most of the students feel that studying abroad is better than studying in local universities. As the saying goes, “the grass always looks greener on the other side of fence.” In this way, I believe that considering abroad have extraordinary points of benefits.
“In 2006 to 2007, according to the data compiled by the Institute of International Education, 582,984 students from all over the world were enrolled in American colleges and universities in a wide range of fields” (Carter, Paragraph 2, 2008). The United States has the highest number of students who are coming to study abroad than any other countries. Each year, the number of international students coming to the United States to obtain degrees is increasing by thousands, and home countries of these students are primarily India, China and Korea, all located in the whole different continent. But what are the motives of students who are crossing the sea to study? Their goal of studying abroad is to experience diversity and to adapt attitudes
After working for 3 years, I was burnt out at work and wanted to rediscover myself and I could only think of travelling. But I always had this feeling that something is wrong. Neither I’d the money nor intention of wanderlust. I was just lost or maybe I want freedom of expression without being ending up in jail. I don’t know it yet. But one thing was sure and that was: I want to experience the world through the eyes of others. Living the lives of others or living with them provides you a window to enter their lives. I have always believed that travel breaks you free. My mind was conditioned to travel. I had changed almost a dozen schools by the time I completed my graduation. Oh boy!
Globalization can best be defined as the shrinking of our world. As technology advances the gaps between Countries is closed, and our society as a whole becomes more integrated. Globalization is something that has been occurring for thousands of years, with one early example of Globalization being the use of the Silk Road, which connected China and Europe during the Middle Ages. Globalization can offer businesses many was to increase business, while at the same time threatening them (Globalization101.org, 2014).
