If one wishes to develop skill at a particular subject it is critical they are able to asses their abilities. This gives an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. By knowing what to focus on it makes the process easier and more efficient. The Writing Apprehension Test (WAT), Self Perceived Communication Competence Scale (SPCC), listening type inventory, perspective taking inventory, and communication competence inventory are tools to decipher people’s communication strengths and weaknesses. Overall my scores indicate I’m a rather apprehensive and shy communicator but still take things into perspective. I feel uncomfortable speaking in front of large groups, in meetings, with strangers and acquaintances, yet still take context into account by ‘sizing up’ the environment. I scored a 60 on a scale of twenty to one hundred on the Writing Apprehension Test. This tells me I posses an average apprehension about writing. I have trouble conveying my thoughts to others clearly and using appropriate word selection. I am often nervous of what others think of my writing and don’t like discussing my writing with others. However I look forward to writing down my ideas and am confident in my ability to write convincingly and legibly. My total Self-Percieved Communication competence sore was 58.75. This means I generally have an average self-perceived communication competence. I scored low in the public, meeting, and acquaintance categories and average in the group, dyad,
I have more fears than confidence when it comes to writing, for me writing is very nerve racking because of all the multitasking my brain has to do. Therefor, I do not write a lot, the only time I would write is if a teacher assigns an essay about a topic we have been working on. I have never really written for my enjoyment mostly it is just for academic reasons in all honesty.
Whether you are in a business school, college, or have a professional position, communication, through good writing skills, is essential for success. Employers spend billions annually training new and existing employees to write effectively. (Simkin, Crews, & Groves, 2012). Individuals entering institutions of higher education must enroll in writing courses to prepare them for success in their studies. Why then, do so many Americans not possess effective writing skills? A number of reasons seem to factor into the decline of these skills.
I thoroughly enjoy writing so I feel confident in my writing ability. One of my high school teachers had told me that I am a gifted writer and my writing has a lot of voice in it. The only things I have found that I struggle with when it comes to writing is grammar and transitions between paragraphs. My reading ability is just as strong as my writing ability, although I do not enjoy reading nearly as much as I enjoy writing.
After taking Honors Written and Oral Communication freshman year I have changed as a communicator. I have grown in many areas as a writer and speaker; however, I have also have skills that need improvement. From the Fahrenheit 451 essay to the six-word memoir, my writing capabilities and experience has changed. I have sincerely grown in certain areas whereas I have also fell short in other areas.
When I sit to write, I have to think about what I want to say. This is not easy for me as I tend to think about several things at once. Clearing my mind and focusing on the writing task is a challenge in itself. I do not consider myself a strong writer and find it intimidating especially when I know it will be critiqued. The sense of failure when seeing the paper I worked so hard on look like the newest local headline of a recent murder is disheartening for me. I assume I am being overly critical of myself but those feelings seem to be redeemed when I look over the aftermath of what was my wonderful work of mental art.
This is my portfolio for the course of English 1010 for the fall semester. At the beginning of this class, I was terribly shy about my writing. I could feel my heart beat every time I was writing around other people. All through high school, I hated to write. I even hated to write small paragraphs because I was scared of seeing red marks all over my paper. I hated red marks so bad that I even start not looking at my papers that got handed back.
In every aspect of our daily lives, we need interpersonal skills to communicate and interact with others efficiently. Individuals with excellent interpersonal skills often collaborate well in teams or groups and with other individuals more generally. When interacting with others, interpersonal skills come naturally, yet in some situations, it can also be challenging to communicate with others. According to **** “Through awareness of how you interact with others, and with practice, you can improve your interpersonal skills” (p. ). Therefore, it is vital that individuals occasionally evaluate their communication skills to ensure that they are communicating in writing or speaking effectively. On the Internet, there are multiple communication self-assessment tools to help individuals discover their communication skills strengths and weaknesses, and overall, determine if they are communicating effectively. Describe the assessment you used to analyze your skills.
One of the most challenging issues as a counselor in training for me is writing. Writing was never my strongest skill, especially writing in first person. It is hard for me to write in first person then in third person because, it makes you think about what your opinion are rather then facts coming from an article or journal. Writing is how we communicate and express our feelings towards a subject. When writing, there are times when he or she have writers block, it is like you know what you want to say, but cannot write it down. With the right resources to help improve my writing skills, my confidence will improve as well as communicate better.
One of the areas in which we must all strive to improve to the best of our abilities is the potential to effectively articulate thoughts and ideas into our writing pieces. Improving my writing capability has been one of the most gratifying accomplishment because I have always been one to feel insecure about my assets as a writer. This insecurity spawns from self-awareness and knowing that writing can place you in a vulnerable state, as you allow others to perceive you personal notions and mental process. Some the most intimidating experience as a writer was having to write three essays within a short period of time because this type of task can demonstrate one’s genuine ability to both write coherently and rapidly. Due to these timed write,
Writing skill is a very important part of communication. Writing is the process to express emotions and ideas, allowing us to put them on paper. Throughout this class I have learned more than I ever thought I would. I have learned different writing techniques, such as, using vivid detail, MLA format, and how to use sources from books or websites. I was able to accomplish these skills from class exercises and writing the four assigned essays. I believe my writing skills have changed throughout this semester because I can recognize what has impacted my writing skills, along with my strengths and weaknesses.
I took me a long time to realize how important being able to articulate my thoughts in writing can be. I’d like to think of myself as a good speaker not a writer. For as long as I can remember I’ve always been able get across what I want and what I intended to say clearly through speaking to individuals or groups alike. My ability to speak to an audience clearly and concisely has gotten me to where I am today in the military. Up until recently I never need to further develop my inadequate ability to write.
Although I do believe it is my strength, I also believe that I can become better at it. In the future, I have hopes to become an Occupational Therapist, so I will have to use writing in my workplace on the daily. Whether it is writing directions for patients, writing emails to other professionals, or writing my findings about different patients, I feel as though I have the possibility to do a lot of writing in my future profession. And I want to be able to do it to the best of my ability. One of the traits Occupational Therapists need are good communication skills, which not only means vocally, but on paper too. I know that this class will teach me all that I will need to know to be able to do
I didn 't have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead. Mark Twain
Personally, I have noticed that I find writing to be rather challenging because I have a tough time writing my ideas down on paper. If I were given a topic to talk about or asked a question, I would be able to talk about my answer thoroughly and with ease. However, when it comes to writing, I consistently seem to be at a loss for words and I find expressing my thoughts onto paper highly problematic.
I have a love-hate relationship with writing. One of the many reason I hate writing is because I worry so much about my punctuation. I could be writing an amazing paper, but when I go back and find a thousand punctuation errors, I try to switch up the writing to make it flow more. When the topic is relatable I excel in the assignment, but if it is not relatable it takes me some time to start or find a connection I can use as a building block. One of the many things I love about writing is the freedom to express my ideas without feeling self-conscious. For example, I love writing spoken word poems, but finding the courage to actually say them aloud in front of an audience scares me a bit. Another negative for me is that I have difficulty expounding on simple topics that the teacher wants me to write more on. I could write a few sort sentences and answer the
