Summary of the Article
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization are tracking the Zika virus and noticing the recent surplus of reported cases with symptoms requiring medical attention. However, before the virus was deemed a hazard, researchers in the 1940’s discovered the virus among monkeys in Africa, but it is believed the virus had gone unnoticed for thousands of years. Later on, researchers again recorded the Zika virus but in a species of mosquito, which can transfer the virus between any host they bite. The virus easily spread across Africa and into Asia and in a country with the specific species of mosquito. Around this time period, cases found in humans only showed mild symptoms. In 2013, the virus sent 28,000 people of French Polynesia into

The Zika virus was found in the amniotic fluid of a women who gave birth to a child with microcephaly, a defect in which a child’s head is much smaller than average. An increase in cases of microcephaly among newborns brought cautionary attention to women possibly carrying the Zika virus and the risk of having children. Researchers believe the virus is only transmitted through mosquitoes, but that explains why the virus is spreading across countries and continents. Though it is not booming in North America, travelers have visited the country while they carried the virus.
How This Article Relates to Viruses
The article I chose about the Zika virus is relevant to what we are learning in class about viruses because it is an example of a widespread virus that is spread to humans through mosquitoes and not from human to human, it affects the host’s body in a negative manner, and it has developed into new forms to affect different species in advanced ways. Since the first discovery of the virus, researchers have found that the virus is only transferred human
First isolated from a rhesus monkey in Uganda, the Zika virus (ZIK V) did not pose a serious global threat until recent outbreaks in 2007 on Yap Island in Micronesia and the current outbreak which began in 2013 in the French Polynesia. And, although the virus is transmitted via infected mosquitoes, studies indicate that the disease potentially can be transmitted sexually (Musso, D., Roche, C., Robin, E., Nhan, T., Teissier, A., and
Zika virus was discovered by scientists in the Zika rainforest in a remote part of Uganda in 1947, in the serum of an infected rheseus monkey. With five thousand two hundred thirty- four known cases of the infectious virus documented in the United States. There is currently no vaccination for the flu like virus. The chief concern of the healthcare administration is to continue to take preventive measures to prevent contracting the virus. Within the same flavivirus family
Marsha- As we know, the Zika virus can be passed from the mother to the fetus and can cause congenital microcephaly and other severe brain defects to the fetus. If you have a confirmed case of the Zika virus, does your department have a protocol in place for scanning these patients? Have you performed a case that there was a confirmed case of the Zika virus? If so, can you tell us what the physicians plan was for the patient and fetus?
Many scientists all around have heard of a virus before, but not as infectious as the zika virus. This virus can ruin a little infant. But one truism statement about this virus, which freaks out scientists, is that it is carried by mosquitos. Terrible isn't it? If I were you, I would think to myself what will make this virus restrain itself? Well in order to stop it the best solution is to splat the mosquitos; because well let's face it, mom's little children that have been born wouldn't want to have a small head and a big body. Lots of people came back with this virus but the devastated citizens didn't notice this virus coming to
“The Zika police,” which is composed of 220,000 Brazilian soldiers and 46,000 health operatives, are visiting door-to-door in Brazilian towns and cities to educate people about the Zika virus by handing out pamphlets (Rogers, 2016). The Brazilian government has a commitment to eradicate the Zika virus because the Summer Olympics are held in Rio de Janeiro in this August. Ramzy (2016) reports that an estimated 1.5 million Brazilians have been infected with the Zika virus. In 1947, the initial Zika was found in the Zika forest in Uganda, from which the virus was named, since then the virus has gradually spread across Africa and Asia (Ramzy, 2016). The first out break occurred in the pacific
February 1, 2016 the World Health announced a PHEIC (Public Health Emergency of International Concern) that declared the Zika virus was a global health emergency. Brazil being the most affected country in the world right now has cases where pregnant women with the virus have given birth to children with smaller heads causing their brains to not develop correctly. The Zika virus is a flavivirus (Karimi) that is related to the common dengue virus and West Nile disease. A flavivirus is a group of RNA (a ribonucleic acid), that are mostly carried by mosquitoes, flies, fleas, etc. The virus carried causes severe human diseases, that are most commonly related to the Dengue and West Nile disease. The disease
The Zika virus is actually not as new as you might think. It was discovered 70 years ago, but a suspected link between the virus and microcephaly (small head size) in newborns whose mothers had Zika, came to light just recently. What once was a suspected link has been confirmed by the CDC.
Zika is a forest in Uganda where the virus was discovered. Although the first case of Zika was discovered in 1947, the virus has just started spreading to America and parts of Asia this year.
For a couple of weeks now, a so-called epidemic of the Zika virus has been plastered all over the media’s health sections. Many people have ascribed the rise in the Zika virus as the leading cause to rise in the cases of Microcephaly (a condition where babies are born with abnormally small heads). This belief has become so strong that the WHO has even recommended that pregnant women not travel to areas affected with the Zika virus. As a result of these recent events, the question “ Does Zika actually cause microcephaly?” begs to be asked. The unfortunate answer to this question is that we don’t know. The article which I chose to read dealt with why it is so hard to ascribe microcephaly to the Zika virus and what we should do about it. In short, the reason why it is so hard to prove is
In the article I read I learned that their has been a new discovery found by three british people that traveled who had a virus that has been spreading in most of Central America because of mosquitoes. They have announced to women who are pregnant that they should cancel trips to many countries such as El Salvador, Brazil, Colombia, México, Puerto Rico, and etc. The virus that has been spreading is called “Zika” which is a mosquito borne disease and is connected to a condition called microcephaly which causes babies to be born with deadly deformations and developments. There is no treatment or cure to heal a person affected but there are ways to prevent it such as mosquito repellant and covering your skin. If people are bit by the mosquito
Zika is a disease that presence it’s self in pregnant women. It spreads through mosquitos and can be given to humans through there bite. The disease can also be spread sexually, but symptoms do not show in males. Symptoms of the disease are fever, rash, red eyes, and joint pain. This disease also causes the baby to have birth defects when being born. The birth defects occur in the brain of the baby, causing the brain to be smaller than average.
Although the Zika virus may be considered a new epidemic virus to many people in the United States Zika in fact has been a concern for Africa and Southeast Asia since the mid nineteen forties. Researchers now believe that the first strand of Zika that was traced back to a primate has now mutated into a more complex strand of virus. The newly formed outbreak of Zika started in western pacific islands and has spread to South America with high concentration of outbreaks in highly populated Brazil. The most recent outbreaks have been seen in the Caribbean Islands and Puerto Rico. Zika is an “ Abrovirus”, which is a virus that affects RNA in humans and is spread through arthropods such as mosquitoes. (Facui, 2016) Zika is a complex virus affecting individuals in particular ways; unlike strep throat that has specific signs and symptoms that doctors can diagnose. Zika may be viewed as a mild flu or in some cases in particular such as the reported case in the French Polynesia and Brazil of having neurological impacts on the patient. (Mlakar, 2016) New reports and studies have shown that the Zika virus can affect fetal development. Microcephaly in particular is a new- found impact on fetus development and mothers infected with the virus. The impacts of Zika are still being learned and only time will be able to present a cure to the virus, vaccines for other abrovirus are now being modified to help prevent the infectious spread of Zika. As headlines build and new cases are reported
Zika virus is becoming a common occurrence in our country, so it is important to start digging deep into the research. The article titled, “History, epidemiology, and clinical manifestations of zika: A systematic review”, focused on the current knowledge, frequency, and clinical manifestations of this virus, while linking the data to the occurrence of microcephaly in newborns. Data was collected from multiple other sources, including 52 studies, and results show Zika as a state of emergency.
The prevalence of the Zika virus is increasing drastically in the United States. The CDC (2016) informs that there is currently a total of 32,725 people affected by this virus, with 98.74% locally acquired mosquitos-born cases and 1.24% travel-associated cases. The CDC also informs that the Zika virus is growing worldwide. Countries need to be prepared and strengthen detection and prevention, as well as care and support for people with this disease. This rapid growth of Zika virus has yet to be met with a large scientific response. It presents many urgent and challenging scientific questions. In an effort to raise awareness in the communities and help prevent the extension of locally acquired mosquitoes-born cases all over the U.S, we decided to elaborate a project that would be focused on prevention and education of the Zika virus, in affected and non-affected communities in the U.S.
There more 2,100 babies in Brazil have been born with microcephaly or other birth defects linked to the Zika. There are two type of Zika lineages: the African lineage and the Asian lineage. Zika is a group 4 which viruses possess negative-sense single-stranded RNA genomes. The deadly Ebola and Marburg viruses are well known members of this group, along with influenza virus, measles, mumps and rabies. The family is Flaviviridae this family include: hepaciviruses, hepatitis, pestiviruses, hemorrhagic syndromes, fatal mucosal disease, flavivirus, hemorrhagic fever, encephalitis, and the birth defect microcephaly. It is a very extremely rare case only fewer than 1,000 case per year shows up. Zika can spread by animal or insect bites or stings also by having unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex. It need bold government actions to help fight this virus. The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting for several days to a week. There are only about 1 in 5 people who become infected with Zika
