The man to discover Alzheimer’s disease was Alois Alzheimer; he discovered it after a patient with an abnormal mental illness passed. Alzheimer’s, also known as AD, is named after Alois Alzheimer and is a continuing loss of brain function that affects thinking skills, such as forming or retrieving memories and judgment. I think that it took him so long to discover that it was a new disease because Alzheimer’s can be so subtle that only a drastic change in the view of the brain can show the outcome of the cells. This disease affects older people however it is not a normal part of aging. AD does not have a cure yet, scientists are however trying to find the root of the disease and control its destructive powers. Currently there is no cure …show more content…
There is usually a way to find out if you have Alzheimer’s, this could be determined either through thorough examination of the cells or understanding of the genetic history of the family. There are some potential treatments for Alzheimer’s that scientists have contemplated such as Zinc and the prevention of a C1q protein. Zinc is critical for the brain and without it neurons can die. As a possible treatment remedy, Zinc can be added to a diet. Also Zn can decline the amount of Amyloid plaques. Recently, Ben Barres who studied at Stanford University School of Medicine conducted a study which involves a protein called C1q. C1q is deemed important because it builds up around the brain where the nerve cells are, this is important because the destruction of nerve cells leads to dementia. C1q is responsible for the elimination of hazardous material and is usually not found in the brain. A study was conducted with the development of an infants brain stating that the growth of synapsis was too quick and there were an abundance of them and something had to get rid of unnecessary synapsis causing a dangerous amount of C1q. Barres is currently working on a possible drug that could prevent the C1q protein. With the current curiosity that AD brings on people, I believe that in no time we will have a treatment. My interest in Alzheimer’s stems of the effects it has on an individual and
Scientists have actually come up with some preventative measures against Alzheimer’s and the onset of this horrendous disease. Physical activity, brain stimulation (such as puzzles, games, regularly reading, watching television, and any other type of social activity), nutritious diet, and also there is an ongoing search for a vaccine. I saw where in Europe they actually treat their age-related dementia patients with gingko biloba. Gingko biloba is thought
Alzheimer’s disease was discovered by Alois Alzheimer, a German psychiatrist and neuropathologist. The disease was initially observed in a 51-year-old woman, after her family brought her to Dr. Alzheimer with concerns about her personality and behavior. He detected many unusual symptoms, including difficulty with
As per Lakhan (2017), Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a disorder dealing with neurodegeneration manifesting the cognitive and behavioral impairment that extensively affects the lives of the people who have the disease. It doesn't have a cure and deals with a long pre-clinical period as well as a progressive course. In hippocampus and some areas of
Even though Alzheimer 's is being researched, it was not a commonly known disease and many aspects of it remain intangible. In 1901 Auguste D. family brought her to Dr. Alzheimer’s after noticing Auguste problem with memory, impaired comprehension, and unpredictable behavior. Dr. Alzheimer treated Auguste till her death in 1906. He performed an autopsy on her brain and discovered dramatic shrinkage of the cerebral cortex, atrophied brain cells, fatty deposits in blood vessels, neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaques. Plaques and tangles in the brain are two of the main features of Alzheimer’s disease. The third is the loss of connections between neurons in the brain. Alzheimer 's disease is an ongoing condition that destroys the connection of cells in the brain. According to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA), it is estimated that as many as 5.1 million Americans have Alzheimer 's disease today. Alzheimer 's disease was discovered by a German physician named Alois Alzheimer. In 1906, Dr. Alzheimer saw changes in the brain tissue of a woman who died from what he presumed to be a mental illness. He described her symptoms as memory loss, language complications, and unpredictable actions. After she died, he examined her brain to further understand how she died. He discovered distinctive plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in her brain tissue.
This disease was first discovered by doctor Dr. Alois Alzheimer in 1906 when he discovered abnormalities in the brain of a patient who suffered from a strange mental illness had passed away. “Her symptoms included memory
Alzheimer’s disease affects the lives of over 5 million Americans today. The cost that it has placed on the U.S is a staggering $203 million dollars. Researchers have reported that those numbers are expected to triple by 2050. However draining that this disease may seem, the real question is whether there is a solution. To this day there is still no cure to stop or even slow down th progression of the brain disease but there are treatments that help cover the symptoms. While the majority of the people who suffer from Alzheimer is generally over the age of 65, about 200,000, of the estimated 5 million, are in the age range of 30-40.
Finally the question everybody wants an answer to, are there tests that can be done to find out if I have Alzheimer's and if I do have it is there a diagnosis of this disease? Before go too far it should be known that there is not a single test for this disease and finding out if you have it can be a very strenuous procedure. A doctor can do any number of things from taking down the history of your family to arranging for brain scans to be done. The things that are most commonly done however are: taking down family history, doing a physical examination and even doing cognitive testing. Even in recent studies is has been found that using peanut butter can help diagnose the Alzheimer's disease. The
In 1906, German physician Dr. Alois Alzheimer noticed one of his patients had extreme memory loss, unpredictable behavior, and difficulty speaking. Her condition continued to worsen and ultimately lead to her death. After his patient died he examined her brain, where he discovered an excessive amount of unusual clumps. This was the discovery of Alzheimer’s disease, and although Dr. Alois Alzheimer didn’t know it at the time, his discovery would be one that uncovered a dangerous future for millions of individuals around the world.
Alzheimer later described Auguste D as having an aggressive form of dementia, manifesting in memory, language and behavioral deficits. Dr. Alzheimer noted many other abnormal symptoms, including difficulty with speech, agitation, and confusion. He followed her care for five years, until her death in 1906. Following her death, Dr. Alzheimer performed an autopsy, during which he found dramatic shrinkage of the cerebral cortex, fatty deposits in blood vessels, and atrophied brain cells. He discovered neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaques, which have become indicative of Alzheimer’s disease. The condition was first discussed in medical literature in 1907 and named after Alzheimer in
Alzheimer’s is a disease with many stages. It is a terrible, slow-progressing disease and few people know how it progresses, how it affects the family members, and the medical research being done to find a cure. It is very difficult to watch a loved one suffer with Alzheimer’s, however finding a cure could be in the near future.
there is ongoing research on reducing the risk and how to cure the disease (Bethune,
For people developing Alzheimer’s disease, there is no actual test to diagnose a person with it. Doctors will diagnose a person with Alzheimer’s disease when they have a severe cognitive decline that will meet the standards of dementia, dementia is very consistent that it will turn in to Alzheimer’s disease and that no other

The first step in stopping this disease, one must understand the sickness of Alzheimer. As you can see in the picture above, this sickness changes your brain activity. I chose this picture because it shows exactly what happens to all your brainpower when hit by this. As you see the great color of the healthy brain on the left while the right one has less activity. A person eventually looses everything they had ever known. This culprit doesn’t only affect older adults but it can also hit people in their forty’s, fifty’s and even younger. This attack on the brain is very sad because it leaves a line of devastation. It is heartbreaking to see people in the early stages of Alzheimer. They realize that something is
