In the Shakespearian play Hamlet the concept of Appearance vs. Reality is exhibited through many layers of deceit. Appearance vs. Reality in Hamlet are demonstrate in how the characters appear to be one way on the outside, but are very different in reality. This theme can easily be identified because all of characters in Hamlet portray themselves differently from how they really are. Many of the characters are tied up in a web of dishonest actions. As the play unfolds we watch this deception come to a threshold that leads to tragedy. First, Hamlet portrays himself to be mad, tactless, and insane. reality possibly better than any character in Hamlet. Claudius who is Hamlets uncle and now his stepfather seems to be a caring stepfather and gracious King who want the best for everyone. In reality he is hiding a terrible secret of a hideous crime. At the beginning of the play Claudius speaks as though he loved his brother and only wanted the best for him: “…and that it us befitted To bear our hearts in grief, and our whole kingdom To be contracted in one brow of woe…”(I.ii.3-4). It becomes clear to the reader that the king only spoke like this to appear as a supportive and loving stepfather to Hamlet and gracious King to his new kingdom. Claudius after Hamlets encounter with Ophelia begins to fear that his masquerade might not be holding up: “ here’s something in his soul”(III.i.7). The King felt like Hamlet might know something and was not just lovesick. Later Claudius unintentionally reveals himself to Hamlet and Horatio when he is confronted by the play.
