Carl Gustav Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who was the founder analytical psychology, once stated: “The contents of the collective unconscious are archetypes, primordial images that reflect basic patterns that are common to us all, and which have existed universally since the dawn of time” (Carl Gustav Jung). Originally published in 1597, William Shakespeare devised a renowned play about two star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet. Most can argue that a prominent factor behind the choice of language throughout this play was influenced by archetypes and the psychological aspect behind them, depicting patterns that reside within a “collective unconscious,” universally apparent and populated by instinct. Throughout the romantic, yet devastating, story of Romeo and Juliet, …show more content…
Carl Jung investigated this realm of consciousness and discovered that human beings, as a species, encompass almost identical traits of thought under our collective unconsciousness, which is the determining component of how the world is considered in perspective, including the symbolism apparent in religion, mythology, and other historical documents. In the play, Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare harnessed this knowledge in order to convey his ideas with text that ensured the readers understood his story and could base a personal interpretation from it. Thus, after analyzing the dreams of schizophrenic patients, ancient symbolism, mythology, religion, biology, and evolution, one can come to the conclusion that each of these areas can, in fact, be proven to have a correlating relationship with the human psyche, adapting to its’ conditions yet never losing its’ mutual and uniting bond through time and
Several emotions engulf Shakespeare’s Hamlet throughout the play, the most famous being Hamlet’s own emotional state. His madness, triggered by his incestuous uncle, has led several scholars to explore the psychological causes of his madness. This research into Hamlet’s madness will explore his madness in comparison to other characters, the psychoanalytical studies behind his madness, and defining whether his madness is genuine or another play within the play.
The story of Rmoeo and Juliet is based on the feud between the Capulets and the Montagues thus it is not suprising that Verona is dominated by masculine tension. As well as masculine tension is also sexual domination and violence a part of the life in Verona.
William Shakespeare was a playwright and author in the 16th and 17th centuries, with at least 37 plays and 154 sonnets to his name. His many works span in genre and form, from the tragedy of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ to the poem of a father’s unconditional love and eventual acceptance of a loved one’s death. Through a vast variety of linguistic and structural techniques, he is able to promote, develop and explain his personal ideology of love. Evidence of this is seen through the character of ‘Romeo’ in ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and the narrative voice in a selection of sonnets.
The tragedy that happens in Romeo and Juliet is inevitable because of the many different themes of love, hate, character and destiny. These themes are essential to the play in order to be an interesting play. For example with love you have hatred, with love you would have character and with love you will also get destiny. All of the themes link to the main point love.
In “The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet” the younger generation, Romeo, Juliet, and Paris, and the older generation, Nurse, Capulets, and Friar, both had similarities and differences which had caused the end. They had a similar opinion on things going on and different opinions ones others. In the tragedy, the main characters died which was influenced by the older generations because they have similar and different opinions which all led the younger ones to death.

In William Shakespeare’s play, “Romeo and Juliet.”
The light vs dark archetype helps to highlight and enhance the conflicts and bring hidden meanings in the play of Romeo and Juliet. In other words, the light vs dark archetype adds a little spice to the play. As it is possible to see in the lines: “Poor living corse, closed in a dead man’s tomb!”(5.2.30). In this moment of the play, Friar Lawrence, the one saying this line, just discovered that Friar John wasn’t able to deliver the letter to Romeo. The letter with all the explanation of the plan to fake Juliet’s death. Now Juliet is going to wake up in the tomb and no one is going to be there as she risks to suffocate for the lack of oxygen. For this reason, the quote from Friar Lawrence make this scene better. In one sentence it explains the
“A man's greatest pleasure is to defeat his enemies, to drive them before him, to take from them that which they possessed, to see those whom they cherished in tears, to ride their horses, and to hold their wives and daughters in his arms.”, said Genghis Khan, ruler of the Mongol Empire. Shakespeare expands on this idea in his famous novel Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet tells a tale of two “star crossed lovers” born of rival families whose feud is continued by men battling in the streets, the two lovers try to get married and start a life together which is halted by the violence of men when Mercutio, Romeo’s friend was slain by Tybalt and Tybalt was slain by Romeo. Romeo’s brutality caused for him to be banished from Verona, a plan was
For instance, prior to taking this class, I did not think about how Shakespeare’s work applied to the psychological realm. However, after reading Shakespeare’s Hamlet, seeing the Oedipus complex demonstrated by Hamlet lusting after his mom has shown me that through Shakespeare’s’ work, Shakespeare tries to instill values that form the basis of modern psychology. Sigmund Freud, a neurosurgeon who helped shaped modern society, used Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, to back his theory on the Oedipus Complex. One speculation of Hamlet portrays killing King Claudius in order to get with his mom, as Hamlet sees king Claudius as similar to
Duality is when one thing or idea contains two conflicting sides. Duality is a theme seen in both Jekyll and Hyde and Romeo and Juliet. In both of these works of literature there are many different ways that the theme of duality is displayed. There are also many instances in which duality is used in modern literature and entertainment, the movie Split for example. In these stories the duality of human nature is displayed by the characters and situations that are included.
Sigmund Freud was the founder of modern psychology. and throughout his life he produced theories about the human mind that were revolutionary for his time. His thoughts about human sexuality, the conscious and subconscious mind, the structure of the mind, and psychotherapeutic techniques are the basis of human psychology. (Thornton) Freudian theories about human behaviour and the human mind are commonly used in psychology today. His theories, in one way or another, can apply to every person living or dead. Although Sigmund Freud lived centuries after William Shakespeare wrote his play Hamlet, Freudian theories can also be applied to the main character Hamlet and explain his sometime
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet’s central idea is about soulmates, a relationship of being together despite all odds. Before Romeo and Juliet met, they were both involved with another. When is their love for one another different from the way they felt towards Rosaline and Paris. How did the people around them notice these changes?

First, one of Juliet’s strongest traits is how fast she can make decisions and how immature she can act, unlike Katherine who thought about how her actions could affect her. In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet can be very naive through her actions, she showed this when she said, “Three words, dear Romeo, and good night indeed. If the fact thy bent of love be honourable, Thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow” (4.3 141-143). Juliet believes that Romeo already loves her and wants to marry her after Rosaline broke-up with him only a few hours before. Unlike Juliet, Katherine doesn’t believe what everyone says as she proved here, “The more my wrong, the more his spite appears.
