Duality is when one thing or idea contains two conflicting sides. Duality is a theme seen in both Jekyll and Hyde and Romeo and Juliet. In both of these works of literature there are many different ways that the theme of duality is displayed. There are also many instances in which duality is used in modern literature and entertainment, the movie Split for example. In these stories the duality of human nature is displayed by the characters and situations that are included. In the Shakespearean play named Romeo and Juliet duality is displayed mainly by quotes and situations. At the end of the play prince escalus says “A glooming peace this morning with it brings”(V iii 316). This quote shows duality when it describes peace with glooming. This is an adequate example of duality because while describing peace, which has a positive connotation, the word glooming, in which a negative connotation is used. Another quote that displays duality is what Friar Laurence says near the beginning of the play “Virtue itself turns vice, being misapplied,/ And vice sometime by action dignified” (II iii 21-22). Obviously vice and virtue are opposite in nature, vice meaning something that is immoral or wicked, and virtue being something that displays high moral standards. Comparing these two very different things gives an idea of the dual nature of man. Duality is also used as a literary device that relates to irony. Irony is when the expectation of something is different than the reality. Although irony and duality are not the same thing, they are closely related as to how they are used, and in what situations they are used. The following quote is an example of dramatic irony and duality, “O son, the night before thy wedding day/Hath Death lain with thy wife. There she lies,/Flower as she was, deflowerèd by him./Death is my son-in-law; Death is my heir” (IV v 41-44). This quote shows dramatic irony because Lord Capulet believes that Juliet is dead even though we know that she is not; in addition it represents the theme of duality because it is saying that juliet is married to death. Marriage is being represented as a good thing, but turns into a bad thing when she is said to be married to death itself. In Romeo and Juliet there
In the scene of the Nurse, Lady Capulet and Juliet, it shows that the Nurse knows more about Juliet than Juliet’s own mother when Lady Capulet didn’t know her age. Even though Juliet and Lady Capulet are related by blood, the Nurse is more of a mother to Juliet than her. Another significant thing about this is that Lady Capulet looks at Juliet like an object just to get
Baz Luhrmann's 1996 film, Romeo + Juliet effectively appropriates the Shakespearean 16th century love tragedy. So why has Luhrmann decided to appropriate Romeo and Juliet? By changing the context, Luhrmann effectively makes the play relevant, discussing his contextual concerns of the 1990’s. This is done through the use of themes in the film, love, family disputes and hate which have remained similar to the original play, although the way they have been presented are different, in particular the form and characters. The form has had an obvious change as the original play has been adapted into a film. Characters in the film have also been appropriated to correspond with Luhrmann's contextual concerns. Hence, Luhrmann successfully appropriates the original Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet by maintaining similar themes, but altering the form and characterisation to fit his contextual concerns.
When Juliet hears that the wedding has been moved up to the next day, she drinks the
In literature, characters are used to portray the existence of duality. Romeo, from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, is a prime example of a character who ponders the duality between love and hate. He feels as if his “love” for Rosaline (a nun in training) is physically harming him, saying, “Is love a tender thing? It is too rough, too rude, too boisterous, and it pricks like thorn.”
Duality is displayed throughout the play of Romeo and Juliet. The things characters in the play say, the characters, and actions of the characters are ways duality is explored in the play. For example, when Friar Laurence is picking herbs he explains how the certain herb he picked could be both poison and medicine. Duality in the play is also explored by love and hate. In the play Shakespeare uses the love, hate duality to show how powerful love is. During the play, Juliet says ”My only love sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown, and known too late! Prodigious birth of love it is to me. That I must love a loathèd enemy.”
Juxtaposition tells us about the characters because it describes their personalities. Juxtaposition can tell us about 2 characters at the same time. It shows what type of person the speaker is, and it shows what type of person the speaker is talking to is. William Shakespeare’s use of juxtaposition helps make Romeo and Juliet a more complex story. It makes the personalities of characters seem clear yet complex. Shakespeare uses juxtaposition to make his characters seem more complex in Romeo and Juliet.
Kermode is suggesting that Romeo’s and Juliet’s age is a big factor in the play, and is one reason why their love was doomed.
In literature, Juxtapositions are useful devices for writers to portray their characters in the exact way they desire. Using Juxtapositions help to provide a better perspective of the characters that are being portrayed. Not only will Juxtaposition help the depth of knowledge about the characters, but it will also bring a sense of surprise and spark the advances interests more. William Shakespeare uses many techniques in his play Romeo And Juliet to create a better chemistry between the audience and his characters. For Instance Romeo, Juliet, and Friar Laurence are three characters that Shakespeare indirectly characterizes through their thoughts, actions and the speech. He uses several Juxtapositions throughout his play Romeo and Juliet to
According to Dictionary.com duality means an instance of opposition or contrast between two concepts or aspects of something. Robert Louis Stevenson states "man is not truly one, but truly two". What does he mean by this? For example, one day someone meets someone and that person looks perfectly fine, but the other person does not really know how the other person feels, or what the other person has gone threw. In reality that person has been living there whole life full of hatred scared to hurt someone till one day someone bothers that person, and that person reacts in a very bad manner because the other person was bothering the other person and does something wrong that no one would expect from that person. Then no one can believe what that person did is true because that person had never done anything bad in there whole life. This is what duality means to robert louis stevenson. Everyone has to accept who they are what they do, how they feel, and how they think. If someone has a bad side they should not hide it they should just accept that part of them and learn to live with it because if they hide it and they try to put it away and one day the bad side takes over the person and that person explodes in front of everyone then every one would have a very different perspective of that person.. However if that person learns how to control their bad side and live with it then they will not have to hide that part of

Imagine two basic, preppy girls fighting because one of them says hateful things behind the other’s back but is nice to her face. In the wild land of high school one may call this being “Two faced,” but no this is just that girl exercising the dual nature of her DNA. Duality is a literary term used to express the relationship between two polar opposites that depend on one another to have perfect balance. Some examples of great literature that portrays the theme of duality is Romeo and Juliet and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Although they illustrate different versions of duality they show that everything has two sides.
The theme of duality in found in the world’s most famous works of literature. Duality is described as the relationships between good and evil, love and hate, and life and death, etcetera. It is ultimately the relation between two opposites that is shown and expressed throughout something. One can find duality in everything they come into contact with, for anything could be used to cause two different outcomes. It is found not only in works of the past, but it is very common in today’s works as well. The Novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde exhibits examples of duality such as Dr. Jekyll battling his other self, Mr. Hyde. Romeo and Juliet and To Kill a Mockingbird are two other examples of great works of literature that explore duality.
“Without contraries is no progression. Attraction and repulsion, reason and energy, love and hate, are necessary to human existence” (Blake). This quote, spoken by William Blake, talks about how dualities are essential to existence. Similarly, in William Shakespeare’s tragic play Romeo and Juliet, none of the concepts can exist without each other. The dualities show that everything needs an opposite to be understood and appreciated.
Universality is a tricky topic to try to confine. There are two different interpretations that can be taken of this word in regards to theatrical works. First is in its literal meaning that the work applies to all people in all ways in all times. In this case, there would not be a single person that will not understand what is being presented before them. For Romeo y Julieta every person in the audience knows what it is like to speak spanish, albeit poorly or well.
