The theme “be careful what you wish for” is developed over time throughout the play Macbeth when Macbeth begins to question wanting to be king when he has to kill Banquo, and when things start falling apart towards the end of the play.
When Macbeth’s wife begins making plans with Macbeth to kill Duncan, the current king, he begins to question whether he really wants to be king or not. He gets very nervous about the plan, and when it finally comes down to it, he gets so anxious and worried that he does not follow the plan exactly, and does not dispose of the murder weapons like he was supposed to.
