The Outsider by S.E. Hinton is a story about a boy named Ponyboy. He was a very smart and athletic person, but once his parents died he becomes a greaser, who does what he wants to do and lives life by his own rules. The death of the parents in The Outsiders impacts the children by making them take a whole new route in life. In The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, the world is now split into districts, each at different levels of wealth. The capital, known as Panem, supports a game and takes two children from each of the twelve districts. In the game, the children fight for their lives, and the last one who stands wins. Katniss learned to hunt from her dad, but when he died Katniss had to teach herself. Both books illustrate death as a social issue. S.E. Hinton shows how death can affect one’s social appearance and attitude, whereas Suzanne Collins shows that after death you can go on and learn your father's …show more content…

First, Katniss risks her life to hunt for food for her family once her father died. This reminds me of Darry because he gave up his education to support his family. Next, In the book, Katniss states that she and Gale go hunting. Katniss goes into the woods illegally to hunt for her family. On page 7 to page 8 it states, “In the woods waits the only person whom I can be myself. Gale…Look what I shot.” Katniss would not need to do that but once the father of Katniss died Katniss’s mom went to a bad place. Lastly, Katniss also volunteers to take the spot of Prim in the Hunger Games. Katniss is risking her life to protect her younger sister. She is protecting Prim to let her live her daily life just as Darry and Soda volunteer to work while they let Ponyboy live his daily life as a good student in school. She is risking her life. Just as Ponyboy stays in school, Prim continues her daily life and doesn't really provide for her family. The Outsiders and The Hunger Games have similar social
