Theme Of Gender In Othello

In creating our collage, we wanted to convey one of the central themes in Othello, and that is one of female inferiority. While we don’t know if Shakespeare was either mocking or reflecting the society he was living in, the theme is presented as one that was important to the lives of Othello and his men. We touched on many different aspects of how women were projected in the book, as well as throughout different time periods in our physical representation of the theme. With the use of color, words, and images we collectively explicated how both of us interpreted the book and how the class interpreted our theme, as discussed in class. Our collage had many graphic including one of a sculpture of a man and woman both naked and intertwined, cut-outs from various magazines dealing with topics ranging from women's’ menstrual cycles and sanitary products, to …show more content…

While there is an uprising of feminism in our generation, there is still a huge ignorance of central issues in the ways women are portrayed. Just as the characters of Desdemona and Emilia represented the two extremes of the female representation in Othello, our collage and its reactions are the three ideas we see in today’s society: the complete awareness of issues, the negation of action on them, and the ignorance of them. While the world we live in recognizes these issues, there is little action to improve the negative aspects of them. These women could have taken down the poster, or reacted negatively to it, but instead they eventually just left it how it was. While this is a harsh reality, it is still something all women must face every day; this could explain the mildness of their reactions. The fact that these reactions were so mild completely reflects the issues in today’s society, and shows just how little of a difference there between Othello and modern
