Sometimes this is the result of a broken relationship, a loss of a job, confusion about the future, anger, or can be a result of countless other events or reasons. This theme of insanity is present in countless pieces of literature due to its relatability to everyone, not just people with a diagnosed mental illness. People tend to do crazy things and act crazily without being completely insane. Insanity is the state of being mentally ill and not in the common state of mind. During the story of Hamlet insanity is a major factor to many situations. Hamlet showed many of signs of being insane, which also led to the death of others. Many ask, was “Hamlets insanity real or fake” and if so how did it affect the story in the ways it did. Many also wonder the signs that he shows to be insane and did his sickness cause others to lose the mental state of mind. In the story of Hamlet the actions of others play into the decisions of others and make their actions rash and harsh. While some in the castle may believe that Hamlet is putting on an act, he proves that he is mad through his violet actions, his mental health and Ophelia.

Hamlet’s father tragically dies and he later finds out that it was his uncle, Claudius, who murdered him. However, Hamlet is not insane, and is instead merely putting on an act in order to get his revenge without getting suspected, which is really quite sane. Hamlet resorts to any sort of verbal or physical use of insanity in order to trick everyone into believing that he has gone mad. When not in the presence of specific characters, Hamlet displays signs of intelligence and rational thinking. Everything that Hamlet is doing is for a very understandable reason; there is a purpose to what he does and why he does it. Hamlet’s personality has changed due to recent events that occurs throughout his depressing life.

For instance, he compared to the god, Hercules. This display how emotional Hamlet is because he is comparing himself to a god. He is stating that he is constantly righteous and marvelous. This comparison enhances Hamlet's insanity. The reason why is because Hercules like his dad Zeus and they have a good relationship with each other and William Shakespeare is trying to tell us that Hamlet and his father have a father to son relationship similar to that. This relationship helps the smart, confuse Hamlet became more mad because he is close to his father who have now died which makes his thirst for revenge stronger. The confuse Hamlet is now apprehending about the death of his malicious uncle. For that reason, he wanted to revenge the painful death of his innocent, godly father. However, he did not commence the murder because the evil, malicious Claudius was in the middle of praying. Therefore, if the good Hamlet kills the malicious Claudius, then the hero Hamlet would have aided Claudius to go to heaven. Given these facts, Hamlet is concluded to be a psychotic

Many events have led to Hamlet's insanity including his father’s death and his own mother marrying his uncle, the new king. This insanity is justified as alright because of the recent, traumatic experiences that Hamlet has had to manage such as his father’s death, his mother’s hasty wedding with her brother-in-law, and his ending relationship with Ophelia.

In Shakespeare's Hamlet, there is a constant theme of madness, which stems from unholy desires. The sinful desire of seeking revenge through killing another brought madness upon Hamlet. Ophelia’s unholy desire to be with Hamlet caused Ophelia to go mad. The madness seen in the characters of Hamlet is created from the overall unholy and sinful desires within the characters.

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, 20% of Canadians will experience a mental illness in their lifetime. Mental illness is a serious issue within society which can hinder the lives of all who are affected by it. Insanity (or “madness” as it is called in Hamlet), is defined by google as a state of frenzied or chaotic activity. Madness is something which can be exploited by those who appear to suffer from it. The exploiting of insanity stems primarily from the criminal justice system, where a plea of insanity could potentially get a murderer a sentence of some time in the mental hospital instead of a life in prison.
