Romeo and Juliet is a story about a long feud between the Montague and Capulet families. This disrupts the city of Verona and causes tragic results for both Romeo and Juliet who were both in a secret marriage and eventually committed suicide in despair. Within the first six lines of the prologue Shakespeare does many things to set the scene; he introduces his theme of hate, suggesting that this is a theme that will be carried on throughout the play. “From ancient grudge break to new mutiny”. Immediately, we can see that the love and hate in this play comes in pairs, therefore it is used in explaining a relationship or an opposition. The vocabulary used in his prologue is somewhat complex, reflecting the kind of language that is portrayed in the play itself, like iambic pentameters and sonnets; the story also carries a theme of love complexities. Shakespeare doesn't stop hinting at pairs in his play. Shakespeare uses this technique with Romeo and Juliet, but not only. Shakespeare used it for Sampson and Gregory who want to put their money where their mouths are, as they swell up the Montagues to start the fight, they trade short-witty comments back at each other like children. In alternating lines, Abram and Samson argue rudely: Abram asks: “Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?” as Sampson replies: “I do bite my thumb, sir”. Abram then questions Sampson again, most likely raising his voice now: “Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?” Sampson answers: “No, sir, I do not
Shakespeare shows the audience the young lovers' shattered dreams through the negative words cluster, such a foe, debt and hate. Juliet then showed her frustration with the feud, and its influence on hers and Romeo's relationship, in her soliloquy on the balcony, as she says:
How effective is Luhrmann’s film Romeo and Juliet as a modern day appropriation of Shakespeare's play you ask? Baz Luhrmann's appropriation of the original play of “Romeo And Juliet” is highly effective as it is modernized to meet the interests and expectations of a 20th century teenage audience. Throughout the original 16th century play, Shakespeare develops the themes of family rivalry and love. The theme of family rivalry has been implemented into the original play through the conflict between two powerful families in the city of Verona. Throughout his appropriation of the play, Baz Luhrmann successfully preserves the same concept of family rivalry but modernises it by portraying the two families as two large business corporations and brands who are constantly in competition with each other. Shakespeare implements the theme of love through main character Romeo being made to resemble and fulfil the role of a typical "Petrarchan lover". Luhrmann also effectively integrates the theme of love through his successful use of filmic techniques to illustrate the unbreakable love between Romeo and Juliet whose love resembles and portrays the characteristics of a 20th century relationship. Using these modern elements, Luhrmann’s film effectively appeals to the contemporary teenage audience whilst powerfully conveying the themes of family rivalry and love. These adaptations made by Luhrmann in his film create a more comprehensible meaning as teenagers can relate to the film with a
‘I fear too early, for my mind misgives some consequence yet hanging in the stars’. This line shows disturbing pictures of Romeo’s fait. Shakespeare uses conflicts inside the minds to create mystery. Love and hate is a very common occurrence in ‘Romeo and Juliet’. There are many characters that show a loving attitude towards someone.
On face value, to “love moderately” implies “loving less”, thereby “reducing” the amount of love. However, it must be read in the context of Friar Laurence’s speech to Romeo, such that it acts as an elderly piece of advice and wisdom to Romeo, perhaps conceivably as a warning. As an uninvolved party surveying the course of events in Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence is given insight on all perspectives, such that he may provide impartial judgements. In Act Two, Scene Five, before wedding the couple, Friar Laurence advises Romeo to simply slow his pace with Juliet, using proverbs to articulate the destructiveness his hastened relationship may likely lead to. The Friar is not suggesting that “moderate” love is wiser than fleeting love, instead guiding Romeo to understand the reasoning behind his wisdom: Based on experience, he believes that loving in moderation allows for a lasting relationship, where the couple should take time to explore their relationship, rather than rushing desperately onwards (i.e. falling in love, be wed and consummated within days).

The main feature of all drama is conflict and Shakespeare uses oppositions in literary devices to create it. Romeo and Juliet starts off with the feuding families fighting, already setting the mood and creating a separation, forcing us as the reader to pick a side. Through the play, puns and other literary devices are used to establish oppositions between love and hate to create conflict and tension.
In William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, about two love struck teenagers whom aren’t able to be together due to their families feud/ social situation. There are two key themes that of love and hate. Before Romeo and Juliet meet, the audience is only aware that he is a Montague and that she is a Capulet. This adds to the scene being so dramatically effective as do other happenings throughout the length of the scene. These include the speech of Capulet and the happy and joyous mood of the party, The romantic speech of Romeo, The hatred and harshness of Tybalt’s speech, a direct contrast with that of Romeo’s and the drama when the two lovers, Romeo and Juliet first meet.
In the play `Romeo and Juliet` the writer William Shakespeare uses the theme of love as a main feature to push the story along. Presented are a plethora of variations of love including family love, true love and courtly love. This essay aims to analyse these three types of love chosen.
The prologue provides the audience with a basic introduction to the themes of the play and also the fate of the characters- giving a sense of fate and foreboding. During the prologue, Shakespeare introduces the conflict between the two families by referring to it as an “ancient grudge”. The word “ancient” insinuates that this conflict is a long lost source of hatred, and possibly even that the origin of the aversion between the families has been forgotten. Additionally, within the prologue, Shakespeare describes Verona as “fair”, this gives a clear juxtaposition between the conflict and a “fair” environment. Additionally, In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare presents the Prologue as a sonnet in order to demonstrate the play 's themes of love and the conflict because sonnets were often used to address the subject of love with in conflict.
To begin, a blooming flower marks more than just the commencement of spring. I decided to visually perceive a blooming flower within my slides as it portrays the importance of Romeo and Juliet 's love. Juliet verbalizes to Romeo that, “this bud of love, by summer’s ripening breath/ May prove a beauteous flower when next we meet.” (2.3.121-122) The flower bud describes the beginning of their love while the blooming flower represents their growing love. In Act 2, the blooming flower utilises the commitment that Juliet wants from Romeo. Further, Juliet tells Romeo that this is only the start of their relationship and that she cannot make any promises until she is aware
Though some may simply know romantic love as an intense bond between individuals devoted to one another, its effects in reality are not always as beautiful as the concept. Particularly when it is frowned upon by society and the people involved also swim against the current, the consequences of this type of love can be damaging to others outside the romance. In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the actions of the young lovers in their desire to be together not only steer the course of their lives, but also those of their friends, families, and other citizens in the city. The unfortunate series of events following Romeo and Juliet’s choice to reach beyond traditional gender roles, a standard courtship, and their established social networks reveal the importance of complying with these norms. By highlighting the chaos in Verona on the path to Romeo and Juliet’s eventual demise, Shakespeare suggests that intense romantic love that threatens relationships and expectations in the established social order leads to tragedy.
Romeo and Juliet is a famous story, known for being one of the greatest love stories of all time. It is quoted for its genius insight on just how this strange emotion works. Both Romeo and Juliet kill themselves for their love, and it only supports how strong love is, right? I disagree. My opinion is that Romeo and Juliet is not a great love story or even a love story at all. I instead believe that it is a cautionary tale about the fact the love can corrupt people.

In addition, Nurse, Mercutio, and Romeo completely show what actual love is and what it is like to lose it due to their experiences.

They develop an obsessive relationship with their feelings for one another; they have a constant desire to be together, even though their emotions are based on sight alone. The addiction was so enslaving, that their only solution to their family fued was to turn to their one and only lover.
