Fear is something we all had felt in some perspective. We are all scared of something. In this story the mother of Eddie is afraid of the outside world. It seems that she has agoraphobia, that she gets anxiety in circumstances where she feels a danger, uncomfortable or unsafe place. “She stood for ages with the front door open. In the end she gave up and lay down on the sofa (…)(l.135-136). She’s is also scared that no one will ever love her, that no one will ever look after her and she is afraid that she will die alone. This is here Eddie comes into the picture, because he is the only one she had left, she cut everyone off, like her mate Lilian and the neighbours. Maybe Eddies biggest fear is to accept the fact that his mothers is his monster because he can’t live his life as he wants. He became resistance, because everything he loved had been taken away from him. But in the end he overcome his fear and says, “If he doesn’t come home, his mum will have to leave the house. Even if she only gets as far as the garden gat”(l.173-174. )And that means that his mother also has to overcome her fear and go
Eddie’s journey begins with a passion to read books and write poems. When Eddie first opened up about this to his girlfriend Lupe, “then [she] told [him he] should be a writer” (Johnson 76). Lupe is the root of his love for literature. However, he cannot let his reputation - which
Fear is the feeling of being scared or afraid, or does it mean more? Fear can change someone and make them into a different person. In the book, Fever 1793, by Laurie Halse Anderson (2000), shows how fear can change the lives of people. The story is about a 14 year old girl Mattie, who lives in Philadelphia when the devastating yellow fever epidemic of 1793 hits the nation’s capitol. Soon the fever hits her home and Mattie has to leave, enduring many frightening adventures trying to survive. This story illustrates when people are afraid, their fear and sadness can make them lose their sense of identity.
Eddie’s father influenced Eddie to be the chaperone in the family despite his age. At an early age he felt as though he had a financial responsibility, which influenced him to get a job as both a shoe-shiner and a paperboy. He describes his family’s structure as the father being the head of the family, and the mother as the heart. This helped create a balance within the family, but caused tension between Eddie and his father’s expectations. Eddie experienced two spheres of education, American school and Chinese school. “I loved going to American school, but Chinese school was another matter.” (Yung 25) He disliked the limited exposure of Chinese education, and felt that he had been exposed to a wider world in American school, which eventually led him to flunk out of school. This came as a disappointment to Eddie’s father, and added immense pressure to Eddie. The confinement he felt in Chinatown frustrated him, his overprotective mother crippled his adventurous-ambition and the pressure added by his father to lead the family caused him to runaway when at the age of 13. He
Through Eddies school experience got off to a rough start with many fights and comments about his parents and their Asian culture. He never really took comments against him very well, he fought back many times with physical violence. Many times these fights were over cultural differences at school. Huang wrote about the lack diversity he experienced when in school and the many names he was called by the students. Many students called him racist names and bullied him; Huang wrote “Edgar grabbed me by the shirt and threw me to the ground. “Chinks get to the back!” I looked up from the ground dumbfounded.”(Huang 32). Because of the lack of
Jenny and Eddie are close and even have secrets like her father’s smoking, up until Jenny has an outburst at the neighbors funeral, which then leads to Eddie ignoring the issue and Jenny
Turning against the world of drugs and violence, Eddie vows to take the straight and narrow path, even if it means struggling at temporary manual labor jobs. So when he takes a landscaping job for a white man across town thinking that god had finally heard him, the man's truck is stolen from the front of Eddie's apartment causing yet another problem to add on. He hid for hours and days drinking because he really liked his job with the white man and was afraid of what might happen to him. Although getting the truck stolen from him kinda seems like a big deal, it is not because that sort of thing happens daily in the streets of fresno that he lived by, it was almost like that was something normal to him. So when his aunt gets home she reminds him yet another time that his cousin died only this time a gun came with the tortillas she would try and persuade him with the avenge the death of her son.
For example, he also saying how much he does for his family. He acts as though because he does all this work for his family, he deserves more respect from them and they should do as he pleases. Although Eddie constantly reminds everyone of all the work he has done for his family, it is clear that he initially only is concerned for himself. He tries to guilt people into doing what he wants. Near the end of the play, on Catherine’s wedding day, Beatrice tries to encourage Eddie to come with her to the wedding but Eddie think that what he wants is the final word. He tells her that if she attends Catherine’s wedding, she is not allowed back in the house, even though she begs and says it would be in honor of her sister. He cannot condone his niece getting married to Rodolpho, so anyone who is supportive of the marriage means nothing to him. The fact that Eddie would cast out his wife because of his niece’s marriage is a big reason why Eddie is an unsympathetic protagonist. In the beginning of the play, Eddie warns Beatrice and Catherine not to tell anyone about Marco and Rodolpho living with them. He tells a story about Vinny, a kid who snitched on his uncle to the Immigration Bureau and was publicly disgraced and spit on by his own family. When Beatrice asked where he is now, Eddie responds saying that they would never see a guy like that again. He shows no sympathy for him and implies that he
His father on the other hand came from a gang background, and his goal as a father was to have his children learn how to rely on themselves. He did not want his children to live off of his money. Eddie is a mix of his mom’s personality with his dad’s values and character.
Fear is a major component of everyone's life. It’s an emotional response to something we might find dangerous or life-threatening. Fear is a survival instinct that helps us decide to either flee, hide, or fight during different situations or problems in our life. Without fear we would always be in dangerous situations and risk our lives. Having fear can show how much someone means to you for example in “The Road” by Cormac McCarthy, the man fears losing his boy and he will do anything to keep him safe.
Eddie is struggling to maintain dominance. In Eddie's view, he has just been monumentally disrespected. His power has been challenged. So, what does he do? He forces his niece to kiss him. Forcing himself on his niece, he symbolically asserts his power over her.
Instead she holded up in her room, smoking meth, drinking [...] Eddie and his 12-year-old sister gabrielle, had no one to guide them”. Edde survived by seeking out new relationships with the motel manager and his cousin Jonathan Levario creating a fresh loving relationship that was not present within his own family even Jonathan later died of acute heroin and meth toxicity. Because loving relationships are one of the best experiences to have, they are also difficult to maintain. Imagine bottles of liquor and bags of cocaine and other drugs Eddie’s parents indulged themselves into satisfying their
When Eddie came home, he became more serious and somber. He completely lost touch with his old self, and completely changed his disposition. Thus, Eddie’s emotional and physical changes impacts the reader’s view of modern day conflicts.
Eddie’s father is one of the minor characters from the novel but he is not just there like any other regular book, the author gives detail of him and how he effected Eddie’s life. When Eddie is at the hospital after the war his dad isn’t talking to him he is ignoring Eddie his father isn’t even
Eddie feels that Rodolphos abnormal behavior may consequently affect his reputation at the docks. Eddie describes his feelings moreover to Beatrice complaining "I'm ashamed. Paper doll they call him. Blondie now. " Eddie has the role of being the father figure in Catherine's life, nevertheless he is not satisfied as he feels that rodolpho has threatened his role and he has been disrespected and undermined.
At the beginning of the play, Eddie is portrayed as a sensible and smart character. Eddie and the girls (Catherine and Beatrice) all have a requited respect for each other – Beatrice: “Mmm! You’re an angel! God’ll bless you” – and there are no problems as such, even when the immigrants first come. He is also respected by the community – Alfieri: “He was good a man as he had to be in life that was.” But this dominant respect that he gains is what he is very used to and the slight changes where Catherine finds another man in her life and Beatrice also looks after the two immigrants (Rodolpho and Marco) effects Eddie hugely. The respect that he becomes used to is now shared by the women in his life between the men in his house and he craves for more attention. This can be considered one of his flaws that lead to his downfall. He is also shown caring for Catherine in the beginning of the play. He can be seen as a normal uncle or father – Beatrice: “She’s got a job.” Eddie: “What job? She’s gonna finish school.” He is also very proud of Catherine – “Sure she’s the best… You look like a
