The Supernatural Theme in Beowulf
The supernatural theme of the monsters in the poem can clearly be seen in the literary work. This theme of supernatural has been considered to be important in the last decades and for that reason, therefore, it is important to address this theme and how relevant it is to the present generation. The role of the monsters can be addressed by focusing on Grendel, his mother and the dragon as well as the hero (Beowulf). Since the poet had a strong Christian standpoint, there is also a comparison of the monsters to some Biblical characters such as Abel, Cain, and Satan (Bartz 1).
There are different characters who portrayed their supernatural natures. For instance, the dragon has the ability to float or fly without wings. It also has the ability to spit fire. There is no normal human being that has the ability to spit fire. Beowulf will be considered as the hero in this story. Initially, he is depicted as a normal human being. However, as he is involved in the battle, the readers are able to understand his supernatural nature (Donovan 120). It is highlighted how this character is able to fight with very strong monsters and defeat them. The hero is also able to stay underwater for hours fighting with Grendel’s mother. This is unnatural since no one can survive underwater for hours. It will also compare how the monsters and the human beings share common traits in both the natural and unnatural worlds. The theme of supernatural in the poem is clearly outlined by the poet where he first addresses Grendel, his mother, and the dragon, all of which are serpentine creatures which lived in the lake, and other sea monsters. These monsters are portrayed as aggressive to human beings and as a result, the hero had to be involved in a number of battles in order to protect his people. The poet viewed the world in a Christian view, however, he had it in mind that the society he was addressing would have been pagans and therefore he had to address the monsters linking them to the Biblical concept as he condemned evils in an interesting way ensuring he was able to capture the attention of the readers. The monsters represent Cain’s children in the biblical concept.
