“Young Goodman brown”, “This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona” and “Happy endings” are three interesting short stories with different approaches to narration. In “Young Goodman Brown”, Nathaniel Hawthorne had used third person limited omniscient narration. The story illustrates the complex event of Goodman Brown of his experience of a night in the terrifying forest. The whole story thus speaks about how the Goodman Brown feels and thinks. Hawthorne had thus explained the detail description of Goodman brown to express his ideas on human in general. As the story only speaks from Goodman Brown’s point of view, we can place ourselves on that character and make an opinion about it. The story may not be the real event or just a nightmare, but the way of …show more content…
He uses third person omniscient narrative style. This approach of narration is the best choice to make reader aware of Victor and Thomas life history, their relationships and personal traits in short period of time. The story describes the journey of these two characters with different flashbacks. The story has different interesting twists and turns and the way of narration has made the story even more beautiful. The incident happening in their journey along with the correspondence of the flashbacks of their childhood and past, made this story more convincing and realistic. Among the three stories, I find, “Happy ending” by Margaret Atwood, most emotional engaging. This story is also written in third person omniscient narrative style to let the reader know about what all of her characters are thinking and feeling. I like the simplicity of the story which speaks immense depth of life. Miss Atwood has narrated the story in different scenarios all with similar characters and same conclusion. The beauty of this story resides on the journey of life. The story begins in the unique but in interesting way. John and Mary

The way she show it in the book is Thomas show that he still cared for Victor though of what his father was going through in life and still wanted to keep a stronger friendship bond. The trait that Thomas has of constantly story-telling is how history is passed on in many cultures, especially in the Native American culture. Even though their relationship changed over the years, he is still the one that Victor takes with him to Phoenix. I think the fact that Thomas had the money to go was
In the story “This is what it means to say Phoenix, Arizona” by Sherman Alexie, the pn;y main characters,Victor and Thomas Builds-the-Fire, had affected each other in some way. "Happy Endings" is a short story written by Margaret Atwood. The story is different than what readers may be used to because it doesn't follow a traditional plot line. Instead, Margaret's story follows an experimental "narrative progression". This type of story progression is a way that an author can manipulate, contort, or obscure the "5 Stages of Plot" structure (Hillard, "Point of View in Fiction"). In this essay, I will explore how experimental "narrative progression" is used in "Happy Endings", how it works in the story, how it relates to the story, and my opinion on experimental "narrative progression" in Margaret Atwood's "Happy Endings".

Therefore, questions form about dream or real life occurrences, and it lingers over the minds of the readers after this ominous, short story ends. Experience versus imagination in the short story “Young Goodman Brown” are questionable because Hawthorne allows the reader to interpret their own imaginations with evidence to conspire if Brown only had a dream, or if it was all reality proving that evil lives within everyone.

Throughout the story we see how Browns character transforms from good to evil and his attempts in resisting his nature. In “Young Goodman Brown,” Goodman Brown’s characterization is presented as innocent, righteous, and faithful, however, as the story develops the reader realizes that this isn’t an exact portrayal of his nature or that of the people he believed to walk on the right path, but rather a testament of the lost faith and innocence in the characters and Nathaniel Hawthorne himself.
Great authors know how to make the reader become emotionally invested in their story. Margaret Atwood’s “Bread”, as well as Makeda Silvera’s “Old Habits Die Hard” are excellent examples of short stories that use literary devices to manipulate the reader’s emotion and thus, enhance the story.
