I think that Thomas Jefferson and United States government shouldn't buy the Louisiana territory and New Orleans because we are already in debt also don't have an army and it is against the constitution We are in debt because of the war for our freedom against the British. Now we are considering about paying 15 million for land we have never seen. This money will go to the French so they can go to war with the British that might involve us. It will take some time to pay it off. We don't have the money. We don't have much power or people to take over that area. Who will explore it we really don't have an army to see all that land. We don't know what is over there. There could be predators out there or Indians maybe there could be more
In “When the Ends Justify the Means,” Barry J. Balleck debates that President Jefferson did not abandon his political ethics by purchasing the Louisiana Territory (P. 14). Balleck states that the Louisiana Purchase was “the greatest achievement of Thomas Jefferson’s presidency” (P. 14). With the addition of the new territory to the United States, President Jefferson secured the nation “for generations, if not centuries to come” (P. 14). Jefferson was confident that purchasing the Louisiana Territory would encourage the development of an upright Republican populace (P. 14). Surprisingly, he had many reservations about his authority to purchase Louisiana, but that did not stop him from laying the treaty before Congress (P. 19). He also knew that, by purchasing Louisiana, the Federalists power might be lost, but he still pushed forward with the treaty (P. 19). Although many historians criticize President Jefferson for giving up his most visible political convictions by purchasing Louisiana, he knew that it would double the size of the United States and ensure much land expansion for the country (P. 20). He strongly believed that the new territory was “essential to national security” (P. 21). In President Jefferson’s mind, purchasing Louisiana secured the “virtues of Republicanism in an ‘Empire of Liberty’” (P. 22). “The Louisiana
The Louisiana Purchase was a portion of land west of the mississippi. It was purchased from Napoleon (French) by the U.S. for 15 million dollars in 1803. The U.S. wanted new orleans because then The United States would have a faster route to get to the coastal states. The federalist had legitimate problems with the Purchase and expressed them openly.
Power is another word for control. People can abuse of their power by demanding things beyond their reach. In the article The Louisiana Purchase, the author demonstrates how Thomas Jefferson abused his power as President to buy the Louisiana territory from the French. The president; Thomas Jefferson, knew that the purchase of this territory was beyond his reach and he still went out and he purchased Louisiana. In the passage it states, "Jefferson was delighted with the deal. At the same time he had a serious problem. The Constitution nowhere states that the President has the power to buy land from a foreign country." Jefferson knew he could not buy Louisiana from the French, but he was delighted with the deal so much, he proceeded with the
The Louisiana Purchase today, is considered one of the greatest things an acting president has ever done. However, when Jefferson did buy the territory, it was viewed by many of his fellow Republicans as Federalistic, and an act of viewing the Constitution very loosely. Many claimed that he was abandoning his political principles, which he had fought for so strongly in the past. However, amid all the claims of his betrayal of his political principles by buying the territory without consulting congress, it is clear that he didn’t abandon them, because he did it for an agrarian expansion, and because he believed that it was best for Americans. Both of these reasons are two of the main ideals of the Republican
The Louisiana Purchase opened a window of opportunity to the Americans, as the purchase expanded the nation further west. Evidently, the purchase of this land mass created a need for new technology and transportation. Throughout the period of 1800-1853, changes in technology and transportation further developed the Northern and Northwestern states, while the Southern states continued with a similar way of life aided by advancements in technology and transportation. Advances in technology and transportation dictated the opportunities presented to Northern and Northwestern society and settlement, but preserved continuity in Southern labor systems.
Jefferson faced a political dilemma by having to make a difficult decision with purchasing the Louisiana. He was a very strict person involved in the constitution. The federal government had a very hard time dealing with the constitution. The constitution would not give the federal government enough power to purchase it from France. Jefferson was an anti-federalist, although he wrote the constitution he did not agree to author it. He also faced the fact about deciding whether purchasing and acquiring land was even legal. On top of that there was also cons Jefferson dealt with. A con was that the United States would have to protect a larger nation with purchasing the Louisiana. The United States would also have to be careful with how the Americans explored the land and settled. Thomas Jefferson had a lot going on after
President Jefferson’s major personal moral dilemma was actually purchasing the territory of louisiana from the french. Jefferson was a strong Democratic-Republican. This party was founded by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, This party was created in opposition of the federalist party which was led by Alexander Hamilton. The Democratic-Republican party believed that a strong central national government would deplete and completely rid the rights of states. The party strongly disapproved of the national Bank Of The United States stating that the bank was taking away power that belonged to the states. Among many of the views of the Democratic-Republican the strongest belief was to strictly abided by the constitution, so when the opportunity arose to purchase the French owned territory, the constitution did not state whether the government could or could not acquire any new land
Thomas Jefferson had mixed emotions about the Louisiana Purchase. On one hand, he knew it would be a grand opportunity, and the United States would be assured free navigation of the Mississippi River. Also, it would double our nation in size and be considered one of the largest, if not the largest, land transaction in history. On the other hand, he was conflicted whether or not to buy the Louisiana Territory because of guidelines set forth in the Constitution. The Constitution did not specifically
Thomas Jefferson, elected in 1801 served as the President for 8 years. Within his time in office, Jefferson did not quite stick to his Jeffersonian system of beliefs. Jeffersonian democracy is defined as little power given the central government, the dominance of an agricultural economy and rural society. Jefferson strayed from his Jeffersonian thinking through the Federal Judiciary case of Marbury vs. Madison and the situation concerning the Barbary/Tripoli Pirates. Jefferson upheld his Jeffersonian principles by passing the Embargo Act of 1807. However, during the Louisiana Purchase, Jefferson attempted to preserve Jeffersonianism, however in actuality abused his executive power. In light of these facts, Jefferson more often drifted from his initial ideals, than upheld them.
It is my belief that Thomas Jefferson and the United States government should purchase the Louisiana Territory and the accompanying land on the grounds that it will double our nation's size.
Some argued that the purchase was unconstitutional because the Constitution didn’t say that Jefferson could purchase the land. Others argued that the purchase was indeed constitutional because the Constitution didn’t say Jefferson couldn’t purchase the land. Also, like said above, Jefferson had an aversion to big moves by the central government. Again, he compromised his beliefs by purchasing a territory from a foreign nation (obviously a huge move by the central government (not by the states)). It is seemingly understandable, however, that Jefferson decided to compromise his beliefs. He was afraid that the French would give up the deal in the time it would take to pass an amendment saying that he could purchase the land. Jefferson also resolved the issue (of constitutionality, his personal beliefs, etc.) by deciding that the growth of the nation (at a modest price) was more important than his own political aversion to big moves by the central government. In addition, Jefferson seemed to have purchased the land in order to protect the United States. First off, Spain’s agreement to give Louisiana back to the French compromised Pinckney’s Treat, which gave the United States access to the Mississippi River. Also, he feared that Napoleon, if he had control over the territory, would close off New Orleans to the United States
The other issue was that the westward migration would weaken the political influence of the New England states, their stronghold. As a result, the New England states wanted to secede from the Union. When Thomas Jefferson bought Louisiana from Napoleon, Napoleon was going into a war that was unavoidable with England. Napoleon needed the money for necessities and Naval Power of Great Britain. Once Jefferson bought from Napoleon, the American Government thought they could sell the vacated Indian land in parcels and “pay the whole debt contracted ( to
I believe Thomas Jefferson in United States government should buy Louisiana Territories or the part of the New Orleans because it would expand the United States and add more states to the country.
Thomas Jefferson faced many moral dilemmas during the Louisiana Purchase such as, going against the constitution, not going to the house before the senate, not knowing the bounders in which Louisiana extended, and by some being labeled as a dictator going beyond the given powers of the executive branch. What people failed to notice is, the Louisiana Purchase was a deal Jefferson just could not pass up. “The president had long imagined the inevitable expansion of the free and virtuous American people would create an “empire of liberty.”” (Boyer.P)
This war is causing most of our debt by buying support and supplies from our allies such as France or Spain. We buy weapons and their troops to help us come out victorious in battle. We do not have enough money to pay them back, due to our country’s current predicament. Our allies in Europe helped through these times by giving us, the Americans, money so that our country may survive this brutal war. This debt will not go unnoticed but we will have to push through, for liberty has a price and we must all contribute to paying that
