The Different Perspectives of Poetry “There are no facts, only interpretations.” - Friedrich Nietzsche. According to Nietzsche, poetry is how people interpret a situation. For example, some people have different perspectives about being in captivity. Although “Untitled” by Tupac Shakur and “Thoughts in a Zoo” by Countee Cullen are both about being in captivity, the poems deal with the idea of being in captivity in extremely different ways through the use of similes. “Thoughts in a Zoo” by Countee Cullen deals about being in captivity by comparing zoo animals to African Americans using similes. When the narrator in “Untitled” talks about being in captivity, the narrator is hope that he or she can find a better place. This is shown when the narrator says “I cannot bear captivity where my culture I’m told holds no significance… But my inner eye can c a race who reigned as kings in another place with green trees were rich and full”(2-7). Alternatively, Thoughts in a zoo has a more depressing tone because the narrator compares zoo animals trapped in cages with African Americans trapped by society. This is shown when the narrator compares African Americans to moles when the narrator says “Some delve down like the mole far underground”(line 13). In “Untitled” the narrator is hopeful even when he is in captivity because the narrator says he hopes that he can live in a different place where he can live like a king. In contrast, in “Thoughts in a zoo” the narrator doesn’t sound hopeful. When the narrator says “Delve down like the mole” the narrator means their lives are so torturous, that they want to hide deep down. This proves that the two poems deals with being in captivity in different ways because “Untitled” uses similes to describe the place the narrator wants to live in, while “Thoughts in a zoo” uses similes to describe how is feels to be in
