The Struggles of Adolescence “Adolescence is a new birth, for the higher and more completely human traits are now born.” -G. Stanley Hall. The process of adolescence is full of struggles. This is the key point in Doris Lessing’s “Through the Tunnel.” In the story, the main character, Jerry, is an eleven year old British boy with a single mother. The two go vacationing to a beach, and Jerry watches older boys swim through an underwater tunnel in awe. He decides that he is going to train to be able to swim through the tunnel as well, and he spends days working on holding his breath.
