Obesity, by definition, is a condition that is characterized by excessive accumulation and storage of fat in the body, usually indicated by a body mass index of 30 or greater. When a person’s BMI reaches 30 and above, he or she is probably obese. At least one out of three people in United States suffer from obesity which means one third of the nation population needs treatment. In 2013, obesity has been officially recognized as a disease by the American Medical Association. The debate for obesity as a medical disease has never stopped ever since. However, while smoking and alcoholism are addictive and harmful, we hardly consider them as diseases. So why should obesity be a medical disease? I agreed with your set of beliefs, as I also agreed with Katz' argument more than Lustig's. Unfortunately, most foods available for our consumption have added sugar. Of course, foods like soda and cookies that have such high amounts of added sugar are bad for us, but not all foods that have sugar in them are detrimental to our health. For example, fresh produce has natural sugar in it, in much smaller amounts than foods with added sugar. So, eating cleaner actually helps limit sugar consumption.
