The catastrophic sinking of the Titanic, over one hundred years ago, continues to drive scientists to search for answers. Was this simply an unfortunate maritime disaster, or did human error play a role in Titanic’s demise? Bruce Ismay, president of White Star Lines, had a dream. A dream, to build a magnificent luxury liner that would transport people across the Atlantic Ocean in style. With the help of the owner, John Pierpont, and ship designer Thomas Andrew Jr., the ship of dreams was soon a reality. However, Titanic’s maiden voyage on April 10, 1912, from Southampton, England to New York, made history in an inconceivable way. Sadly, over one thousand innocent people went to a watery grave in the middle of the cold, dark, Atlantic Ocean. …show more content…
Until now, scientists could only theorize what happened to cause the Titanic to break in half and sink as quickly as it did. Now, with actual pieces of Titanic, they have started to put the puzzle together. A puzzle that is disturbing in many ways, leading scientists to believe that sub-standard construction was, in part, to blame for Titanic’s demise. After careful inspection of the recovered hull the results were shocking. “Investigation of the steel used in the hull revealed that plates and rivets became brittle when exposed to low water temperature. On the night of the disaster, the water temperature was about (-2degrees C). In addition, the steel had a high sulfur content, which also made it more liable to fracture” (Adams 56). Steel that has higher sulfur content, according to experts, is caused by open hearth firing. This process cures the steel at a faster rate but causes it to become brittle. According to investigators today, the steel used on the Titanic was thought to be low grade. In a like manner, steel that is stressed is expected to bow outward, however the steel pieces that have been recovered are shattered. Another indication the steel used was low grade. Next, the original plans called for sixteen
Titanic: The Unsinkable Ship, is a tragic story we all know well. Ironically enough, as you know, the Titanic (the unsinkable ship) sank; however, the lost and lived lives of the people aboard the tremendous ship when it sank are, sadly, stories we do not know. All of them , rich and poor, were in the same boat, literally, when it crashed into that murderous glacier. However, is the gun the murderer if a man pulled its trigger and the bullet found its awesomely sweet embrace in the chest of another. What I mean is, the death of 1,503 souls could have been saved if pride would have been set aside and warnings heeded. One of the souls lost was Sydney Samuel Jackson, a lawyer originally from south Africa who was on a trip to Montreal with his wife, and her mother and sisters .
The British luxury passenger ship, The Titanic, set sail on April 10, 1912, en route to New York City from Southampton (Lord ch 1). During her maiden voyage, midnight of April 15, 1912, she began to sink (ch 1). The Titanic had a collision with an iceberg that was around 100 feet tall (“Titanic: 40 Fascinating Facts” 3). Regardless to how greatly manufactured the Titanic was, and with beliefs that she was unsinkable, the miscalculation of human error proves that every possible outcome cannot be prevented, disasters can still occur regardless of careful planning.
Many people called the Titanic unsinkable because the ship was so big, expensive, and took three years of hard work to build, A large number of people believed the Titanic couldn't sink, “My mother said to my father, Isn’t that the ship that they say is unsinkable? And he said, No, this is the ship that is unsinkable” (C.Q.D. THIS IS TITANIC). People who bought a Titanic ticket were most likely very rich, and thought the Titanic was a safe and sturdy ship. The Titanic was called the unsinkable ship, yet it sank on its very first voyage. When the beautiful ship sank, it became a marvelous and intriguing story in this world today. The sinking of the Titanic was not expected, which is why trouble came once passengers knew the boat was going down. There were not enough lifeboats for everyone who boarded the Titanic, and no one was ready for this disaster to occur. The Titanic was jinxed when people said it was an unsinkable ship. Furthermore, when the Titanic was in the midst of sinking it communicated with many other ships, but all were very far away, except for the Californian, and “Unbelievably, the Titanic’s crew could even see the Californian in the distance, but were unable to contact the other ship despite their repeated
On April 15, 1912 at 11:40 P.M. the Titanic collided with an iceberg and by 2:20 A.M. it was at the bottom of the ocean; over 1,500 people died. The massive loss of life was a shock to the world. The “unsinkable” ship had sunk. Despite the Titanic’s claims about being “unsinkable” and completely safe, many avoidable things led to the immense number of fatalities, such as the shortage of lifeboats, lowered bulkheads, and the lack of binoculars. Bruce Ismay, the designer of the Titanic and director of Whitestar line, often chose the comfort of his passengers over their safety. While Ismay was designing the Titanic he thought that the deck was too cluttered so he decided to keep only a third of the lifeboats needed to save all of the passengers
On April 2,1912 the RMS Titanic set sail on its maiden voyage from Belfast, Ireland to Southampton. The Titanic was 4 days into its exploration when the collision of the iceberg occurred. As the Titanic set sail on it’s maiden voyage, some interior work still needed to be completed. Some areas of the ship had no heating while the others areas where to hot. A team of about 9 harland & wolff employees, including the ship's designer, Thomas Andrews, sailed as members of a guarantee group, to make sure any problems with the ship were attended to. They as well perished in the sinking of the
“Lifebelts on everyone! Lifebelts on!” Crew members were yelling in the middle of the night. I couldn’t believe! The Titanic was supposed to sink, even though it was unsinkable.
“The ship had watertight compartments that would allow her to float indefinitely” According to Robert Ballard in Exploring The Titanic. Although, this accusation was unfortunately far from the truth. These compartments quickly filled and abolished the idea of “watertight”, like domino's they flooded one after another The question then is: Who is responsible for the Titanic's sinking that sent 1,500 innocent people to a watery grave?. The consequences of Bruce Ismay and Thomas Andrews faulty design may have been the downfall of this “Unsinkable” ship.
No one ever thought the Titanic would sink, but it did. No one ever thought the Argistan 447 would crash, but somehow it did. It started out as a normal day. Little did I know that this ordinary day would turn out to be one of America's most memorable plane crashes. It was Thursday, normally I would be heading to work, but today the President had called 12 of us in to meet him. We boarded the plane, and I got seated next to the media director. Her job was to censor all of the media that gets broadcasted throughout America. Liftoff was like the definition of perfect, but about halfway through we turned off course.
What caused the“unsinkable” R.M.S Titanic to capsize down to the depths of the North Atlantic Ocean and kill an abundant number of people? The “ R.M.S Titanic” sank due to an assortment of obstacles; however, it can be narrowed down to a few critical things. The survival of people was based on availability of lifeboats and wealth class. Mr Joseph Bruce Ismay was a wealthy businessman who built ships. Mr. Ismay made it away from this tragedy because of his wealth. An iceberg along with the crew’s ignorance and unreadiness caused the R.M.S Titanic to sink to the depths; however, Mr. Ismay along with other wealthy people along with some poor made it out alive.
In final thoughts, nothing was going to prevent the Titanic from being struck by the berg. Despite how greatly manufactured, and how well planned out the Titanic’s voyage was, human error has come to prove that disasters happen. Miscalculation of the Titanic en route caused the largest ship at the time to sink, bringing down 1,600 people with it. Thus, proven that nothing can prevent well thought of and documented plans from turning into great
Most builders of the ship thought that if they added more lifeboats would disquite the first-class passengers and ruin their view of the ocean and didn't add them.
The Titanic was one of the biggest, and most luxurious ships at one time, it set sail to New York from England, carrying 2,200 people on board. (Warner) However, a serious tragedy occurred 3 weeks before the voyage, a large coal fire. The fire took place near one of the ship’s boiler rooms, in a three story high bunker. It damaged the ship’s hull, which theories say weakened the ship by a large scale, giving the Titanic an easy access to anything damaging in its path, in Titanic’s case, an iceberg. (Bilefsky)
When many people think of the word “ship” one of the first images that comes to mind is The Titanic. It is no surprise The Titanic is one of the world’s most famous ocean liners, it revolutionized how luxurious and comfortable a ship could be , along with a sinking so famous that it makes many fear even stepping near a ship. However, that cold Atlantic night was many years ago and the word “ship” is much different from it was then. Technology today is always advancing and in this modern-day it is a race to who can build the most innovative, luxurious, and downright unheard of in all forms of travel and leisure. In the 1910’s, The Titanic was advertised around the world for breakthroughs in size,
This paper is dedicated to one of one of the most famous ships in the history of humankind – the "Titanic". More than eighty years have passed since the frosty night of April 14th and into the 15th of 1912, when the giant "Titanic", the biggest and most luxurious ship of the century, sank after it collided with a drifting iceberg. At sea, to the south of the island of Newfoundland, over 1,500 ship’s crew and passengers died. Despite two investigations conducted immediately, after the floating palace was absorbed by the wave, many details remain unclear. There continues to be some "white spots", some incomplete evidence, and some of the findings, even after detailed study, are not convincing. Therefore, this event gave rise to numerous conjectures and speculations, as well as, the most incredible legends. One of the reasons that gave rise to the "white spots, was that, in the drowning of the "Titanic", there were only four people, who could provide very important information about the conditions of navigation, during the most critical hours, radio reports, warnings, and notices of appearance of icebergs near the route of the vessel. These four were the second mate, who was carrying out the watch on the bridge just before the tragedy, the fourth mate, who was also on the watch at the time, a telegraphist, who received some of the cautionary radiograms, and finally CEO of the shipping company, "White Star line ", J. Bruce Ismay, who knew everything about the situation.
When analyzing this disaster the first thing to consider is the engineer’s design of the Titanic. The Titanic was employing many new and innovative designs that were believed to make the Titanic the safest ship ever built at that time. The engineer’s of the vessel made claims that the Titanic was “unsinkable” and that “even in the worst possible accident at sea, the ship should have stayed afloat for two to three days.” One of the features that lead them to this claim was the 16 watertight compartments in the hull of the ship. The way they were designed allowed for up to four compartments to be breached and they ship would still carry
