The novel To Kill A Mockingbird is relevant in today’s generation because it helps teach the importance of empathy. One of the greatest lessons that you can teach in life is to have empathy for someone. Atticus teaches his children about empathy by getting them to consider the feelings of others. Atticus tells Scout, “ You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view . . . until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (Lee 39) This quote allows the reader to know how Atticus’s thoughts are perceived and shows what the really important lessons in life are. Although Tom Robinson’s empathetic actions for Mayella Ewell cost him his life, Atticus still insists that his children should be empathetic of others. Mrs. Dubose was a sick, old woman waiting for death. However, she has one more goal to achieve before her life came to an end. She wished to be free of her morphine addiction. Mrs. Dubose displayed courage in a situation where most people would surrender and give up to the drug. She showed an explicit amount of courage every day in the fact that she made sure she kept her addiction a secret. Death wasn’t something that Mrs. Dubose feared, but challenged it through her perseverance to leave this world free of any addiction. It was only after her passing that the people who she had affected, become aware of how courageous she was. She surprised those around her, who had found it far easier to pass her off as a sick, old lady. Mrs. Dubose was one prime example of a character that exemplified courage throughout the novel. The essence of being courageous is being spread throughout the whole novel by multiple characters, which really ties the book
